I just got the bike, and there is a knocking sound that is coming from the top end, can anybody tell me what it is?

it is a knocking, and it gets faster and louder under acceleration

I would run it by your dealer and have them listen to it to be safe... a ticking noise is normal, but it shouldn't be knocking at all.

Let us know what you come up with.

My brother says it is a ticking, but to me it sounds like it is a knocking and not normal. It is definetly coming from the top end though. Could it be the valves? My brother thinks it is the magneto? I already took it to the dealer and they told me that they would have to tear it down to figure it out, said I am looking at $400! Help!

Take a long screwdriver, start the motor, put one end on you ear and the other end on the engine.... keep moving it around until it's the loudest... tell us where that is and you will most likely have the answer. It's most likely "ticking" and is normal on that motor with a little wear. How many miles are on the bike?

It has 29,000 on it, and the noise seems to be coming from the top center?

I would for sure have them adjust the valves if your not sure if it has been done yet. That is the most likely the cause of this noise here.

DO you know if it has a rist pin?

The wrist pin is present in all piston type motors, it's what holds the piston to the connecting rod.. so yes it does, but this is most likely not that.
