Won't start and really loud backfire

Hi All, I have an '87 XV400 that I am trying to restore.

The bike was running but with very poor throttle response and lumpy idle when I got it.

When I started the bike to allow it to get up to temperature the idle speed suddenly increases considerably. It the back fired loudly and cut out.

I decided to change the filters and oil before doing anything else at this stage.

Since then I have replaced the oil/air and fuel filters.

Now when I try to start the bike it will not tick over, is very reluctant to fire up and back fires like a gun has been shot.

Any ideas / help with what I should so next.
