First oil change!

I am changing the oil in my Liner for the first time 600mi. and was wondering if I have to use Yamahalube or if I could use any oil of the same viscosity? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Jim

the only advantage yamalube has is that it takes the guess work away. it may not be better than some of the oils out there, but it has at least the minimum of needed additives. in general if you find a motorcycle oil that meets the api and viscosity it is equal to or better than yamalube. its best to stay away from car oils in some cases they meet the requirements for your bike , but it is difficult to tell what additives are in a car oil . because most japanese motorcycles have wet clutches the additives needed could differ from that of car oils.

There are oil packaging facilities that use the SAME oil (proper corresponding viscosities of course) for a dozen or more brands from the cheap .89 at the time to the expensive 2.00 plus and it was all the same oil. I worked at one for a summer college job once. Saw it first hand.
