Default FZR 600-1000 swap

I am looking into a 90 FZR that i had posted up earlier with a motor that has a bad motor and I found a FZR1000 engine on craigslist the other day for $100 could I put this motor in the bike or is it not going to fit or will there be other issues to the swap?

Even if the engine physically fits (which to be honest is doubtful) you will then look at swapping, loom, ecu, carbs, air box, downpipes, possibly swingarm and wheels ( depends on sprocket alignment). These at things which I would imagine are going to be minimum requirement.

Are the fzr 600 and the 1000 the engine came out of even of the same model type ( same era)

The 600 is a 90 and the 1000 engine is out of a 93 bike.

The reality is that this can not be done. Sure with enough time and money, anything is possible. But this is one of those that even with enough time and money it is not practical. There was one person who did it successfully (getting it in there) but his frame split in half the first trip down the road. Here is why:

The 1k engine is +3" wider than the 600 engine.

This means that the frame has to be cut and welded to get the carbs into it and the back is not really wide enough to mount the back of the motor to the frame.

The 600 frame is not that strong. With the mods needed to get it into the frame, the structural integrity is now gone.

Your best bet is to get a YZF600 engine and use that. It is a direct bolt on with one exception - you need to change the swingarm as well to get the sprocket to line up. This also gives you a stock 17" (160) tire.

If you had access to a 3TJ (91+ FZR400) frame, this would be a different story. The way engine mounts in that frame makes it easy to do other engines. You can cut the engine mount off and weld on new ones. Plus the frame is fairly wide. People have successfully put CBR900RR and YZF750 engines into these frames. Yes they are that strong. Just so you know, the YZF750 and the FZR1000 / YZF1000 (Thunderace) are the same physical dimensions.

Ok thanks for the quick answer. I really dont want it for the preformance or anything I just saw it was cheap and am looking for the cheapest way to get the bike back on the road. Are YZF motors cheaper and easier to find than the FZR motor? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

In just straight cost, your best to get a FZR600 engine because your only expense is the engine. You don't have to do anything else.

The YZF600 engine will directly bolt into a FZR600 frame with zero modifications. But you need to swap the swingarm and rear rim to get the chain alignment correct. For this you only need to by some new swingarm pivot bearings and spend an hour with a dremel cut off wheel to make it fit. But there are more things to buy to get it to run. You need the wire harness, coils, TCI, carbs. These add up very quickly when you look at the cost. Plus you need to run either pod filters or you need a 95/96 YZF600 air box and any year YZF600 fuel tank as the air box will not fit under the FZR tank cover.

You can find cheap engines. You just need to look and snatch on when it comes up. The FZR engine is the cheapest option, but to me the YZF engine is the best. It is all a matter on how much you want to spend. And I would expect that any motor selling for $100 will not last very long. Most engines are going to run about $400-$800 before any shipping cost.

Yeah that was what I figured with the $100 engine. I am just looking for something cheap to get her back on the road fast as I probably wont keep the bike I just figured I could fix it and turn it relatively quick with a half-way decent profit. I don't want something that is going to blow up either shortly after getting her together.

and would it be worth a strip down to take a look if ur going to bin it anyway

I'm looking at getting a bike with a cracked motor casing. I can get the bike for around $200.

Buy the bike and part it out and then buy a YZF600 motor and dump that, the TCI and the harness into the fzr if you're going to do anything. then buy the rear end and be set..

this is a costly sport/hobby, unless you find complete bargains yano

Well to be honest with you I am just looking to get it running again and sell it. I dont really want to putz around with making a YZF motor fit into a FZR. I would rather just get an FZR motor and be done with it if I am going to do it at all.

With the cost of a decent motor you still might end up too deep in the hole to make a good profit off the bike. I just picked up my running FZ700 for $500
