We got home a bit ago....I am stuffed!! Now its time to hit the sack since I have to get up and work tomorrow. Any of you guys have to do the 9-5 in the morning?
Nope! Going to the Yamaha dealer tomorrow to check out some dirt bikes for potential Xmas gifts for the boys. (well, and of course myself :mrgreen )

Sweet!! What are you thinking about getting?
Sweet!! What are you thinking about getting?
Well, my oldest (15) has been kart racing and has to move up in class next year, requiring a new kart and engine, etc... ($$$$), but the local club is falling apart and costs are going through the roof and we're generally just not too comfortable about the situation. So, when we sell his current kart, I'm considering getting us all into dirt biking, which will be phenomenally cheaper and more fun for all of us.
That said, I'm looking at the TTR50 or CRF50 for the 9-yr old, TTR 125 for the 15-yr old (both have no previous bike experience), and a WR250 for moi. All 3 bikes will cost LESS than the new kart, engine, parts, tires, etc.
KWComp 11-23-2007, 02:57 AM Just something to think about - The new CRF125 might be better for your 15 yr old. I am not sure how comfortable he is on dirtbikes, but at 15 if he is aggressive at all he will probably be killing that TTR125 in no time. The CRF is a true MX bike and not an offroad bike like the TTR. If not that then try the TTR230. I have a CR230F (would have bought the TTR if it had been out when I got the Honda) and its a great bike. The offroad bikes are not nearly as powerfull as the MX bikes, I bought the 230 for our older daughter to ride when she was 17.

Thanks for the info. He's never been on a motorcycle and is usually very timid about stuff like that (although on a 4-wheeled kart he's not afraid to lay the chrome horn on ANYBODY). I see us using them more for trail riding vs mx track riding. If it goes like I imagine, the 9-yr old will move up to the 125 in about 2 years, the 15-yr old can get the WR250, and yours truly gets to upgrade to the WR450, which just may see some motard duty, then. :muahaha

Agreed, the TT-R125 is too small most likely. The one I bought for my wife is almost too small for her (5'6" @ 120 lbs), but I'd rather have it that way as she can touch the ground and move it around easily as she's by no means aggressive on it.
I only taught my son to ride on the TT-R, once he got the hang of it, I move him up to the YZ-250F. He's not aggressive on the 250F yet, but he's only been on the track a few times. Next season, I'll get him out more.
I think you're a little small on the sizing for bikes K. For yourself, go with a 450F right away. You're an experienced rider, and switching to trail riding won't be that much of a difference. A 250F is more flickable, but it'll save you from moving up next season. Also, a WR450F is severely detuned. So, you can ride as is, then uncork it later and be good.
For the 15 year old, WR250F right away. Same things regarding detuning, etc. But, teach him on the TT-R.
TT-R125 for the younger ones if they're in the 8+ age. There's a lot of kids between 8 and 13 riding TT-R125's on the track and they're killing the bikes. BTW, there are three options on the 125: TT-R125=small wheels with electric start, L=large wheels, and LE=Large wheels with electric start. I have the LE
There's now a TT-R 110 which would be a good option for younger kids. It's the next step up from a PW80 for the most part.

Dayum, that old and still wanting to learn to ride :old

Nothing wrong with that. :rofl
Fixed the original post.
Looks like it's gonna be the CRF70 for the 9-yr old, CRF150F for the 15 yr old, and the TTR230 or WR250 for me. The CRF70 is the same physical size as the TTR110, but weighs a LOT less. The CRF150F is the same size as the TTR125L but seems to have a decent power advantage. The TTR230 vs WR250 is a toss up for me right now. I'm not sure the almost 2x price of the WR is worth it. I think in 2 years the 9yr old will move to the 150, the 15 yr old to the 230/250 and I'll get the 450 then.
Again, I'm not looking for ultimate power, we'll spend most of our time trail riding vs mx'ing.

The same way 90% of most other threads eventually turn "gay".

I think you're going to find the TTR230 too underpowered for you. Again, both of the WR's are severely detuned. You can ride them for a year or two as is, then uncork them. You'll be better off IMO

So you're saying get the WR? Even with the price jump, that's the way I'm leaning, because of the potential to tune it up and the fact it has the light on it for trail riding. I would have to add one to the TTR.

Bingo. The TT-R is a decent trail bike, but it's by no means near WR capabilities. If you buy the TT-R, you'll be bored of it by the second month. Even if you uncork it some, it's still lacking. The WR has a lot of capabilities, and you can do the mods slowly as you progress.
Not sure of the age of your 15yo, but mine is 5'11" @ 165 right now. The YZ250F fits him perfectly. Something to think about on buying bikes for him.
Also, make sure that all bikes have spark arrestors in them. The TT-R's should from the factory, and the WR's should as well. But, just in case, always good to check into.

I should dope slap myself for this, but the "15 yr old" is actually 16. I keep forgetting that he's no longer 15, even though he only has a driver's permit. For some reason I equate those 2.
Anyhow, he's about 5-8, 5-9 right now, but he definitely doesn't belong on a YZ as a first bike. His attitude has always been "I watched them go fast on TV and they are my age so I can go fast too". He doesn't appreciate the fact that those guys have ridden for years and are very skilled. He's already learned that the hard way in kart racing. It took months to get past his mule-headedness to change his driving style to go faster. He was determined to drive his own way and somehow miraculously he was just gonna get faster one day. Made a lot of mistakes doing it that way. The first few times were OK, but they became stupid mistakes after that. I couldn't, in good conscience, put him on a race bike when I know he's just gonna pin it and think he's gonna ride like the GOAT. If/when he demonstrates he could handle that, I'll gladly get him one. Not until. He's gonna have to show some real commitment and willingness to learn properly.

Nah, I'm not saying to buy him a YZ. I was only giving my son's size as an example. The WR250F would be perfect for him, as it's detuned. This way, as he learns control and respect for it, you can open it up some with relatively easy mods. For yourself, buy the WR450F. You'll save money over the long run, and everyone can grow with their bikes.
My son is on a YZ only because the TT-R is too small for him. I'm not too worried about him pinning the throttle. In fact, I have to get on him to go faster because he putters around the track. He's only ridden about 6 times or so, but he's pretty responsible. Next year, I want to get him and a local high school student together so the high schooler can show him what he's capable of doing on the YZ.
This thread should probably be split... :lol
BTW, for some reason, I thought your kids were < 10
One of the kids is 9 (and has a twin sister who will probably ride the 70 from time to time).
Yeah, it would be good if a mod would split this out into it's own thread.

Ahh, I thought the pictures from earlier this year showed them being around 6 or so. I think the pics were of them up in the loft in the garage.
