That's only because you have never used a PC with Vista that is properly setup... Vista kicks ass when it's done right.

Got Vista on a couple of new work laptops here, and it's the biggest joke I've ever seen.

It takes forever to start up, brand new Dell laptops that are still in their factory state and they are slow as hell.

Microsoft are pure crap but how they can just declare this product ready to be sold is beyond me, it's absolute poo.

I'll have Mac OS any day, but because we have to have Microsoft shits to run the programs I'm stuck with it. Glad I'm still using XP because I'd shoot myself if I had to put up with Vista.

Maybe so, but we got some brand new Dell laptops, and they are so unbelievably slow at start up by the time it's started up it's christmas 2009 already.

And overal it just doesn't seem to run well at all. We have the older model still with XP and it absoloutely kicks its ass. Even fully loaded with all the programs I've rammed on it.
And a factory fresh Dell with Vista is running like turd. I wish I could be more positive about it but I've handled about 30 computers now with Vista, from home to Ultimate and they all sucked. Machines with Ultimate btw were definently better. I don't know why but it seems they wanted to punish everyone that got a different version of Vista than Ultimate.

I put Vista on Candace's computer (5.2 rating)...

Linux is much nicer IMO. If i want all of the fancy effects (which I don't really care about) I can boot into Gnome w/ Compiz-Fusion...

I can buy a dell laptop for 500 bucks.... that doens't mean it's a good computer... really the lower end dell stuff is crap... lol

With that said I'm also running Vista Ult on a 3 year old dell box as well with no issues other then needing a new sound card.

It'll run fine on that... The biggest issue with vista is that everyone was buying it for the desktop effects (translucent windows, etc) but their crappy on board video cards wouldn't run it...

I have it on my wife's computer (1 gig ram, celeron m, nvidia 7600gt) and it runs fine...

They weren't 500 buck laptops I'll tell you that, they go here for just over a grand. So that would over 1500 dollars.

Not low end at all.

I've been told by a few of the computer tech guys that Ultimate is the only way to go when it comes to Vista. Tonnes more stable than the other versions.
I had to install some stuff on a laptop the other day with the Home version on it and before I could actually open the CD the computer froze when I hit the start button.

You cna get both 32 and 64 bit versions...

As for running on on those specs above, yes it should be fine, the key is making sure there are drivers for your hardware.

The older dell I'm running it on is a pent 4 3.0 ghz with 1gb of ram... and it performs very well. It has a performance rating of 4.1 though compared to the 5.6 I have on the big system. It still runs fine though for normal use, web, e-mail etc... that's all my wife does anyway.

I wouldn't call it the new Windows ME all over again. Windows ME was the last batch of Windows 98, which it's based on the 98 kernel/OS. However, Vista is completely new using a completely different kernel and architecture from XP... :)

Bullshit and not a step foward? I'm guessing the hardware you have couldn't use it to the full potential... :poke During the time when the Beta came out, I can tell you most of the hardware out there are still not really designed for Vista. I have to agree with you there. HW designers are really behind on this one. But I am talking about some of the basic shit with Vista now like trying to install a program: Click button "are you sure you want to do that?" Click yes, "are you sure you meant to click yest?" Click yes, "I do not think that you are smart enough to under stand my last question, so Ill ask it slower: Are You Sure You Want To Do That?" Ahhh forget it, Click Cancel, "see told you so"... Then it laughs at you.:lol

I guess it's an extra security measure since people has been installing crap all the time... :lol Kind of like XP's DEP (Data Execution Prevention)... there is probably a way to turn that off or make it less sensitive like in XP... :)

When I was in the market for a laptop, I was considering Sager (http://www.sagernotebook.com/default.php). However, because I want ultra-portability, they didn't meet my requirements. But, if you're looking for a decent system, this might be an option for you.

For those of you who are "jumping ship" to Mac and think you're getting a better deal. Think again. Mac has had some pretty major security flaws along with some of the more recent screw ups in software history. Go here (http://www.us-cert.gov/current) to read about some of the recent security flaws. Most on that page are products released by Apple.

In essence, you are buying an x86 architecture system that Mac puts together and charges a shit load of money for. They won't support Mac OS running on anything OTHER THAN their own proprietary hardware.

You're better off downloading and running one of the more user-friendly Linux distros on your current x86 architecture than you are to dump your current system and spend much more money on a Mac. Learning curve will be about the same. ;)

from /. (http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/11/26/0643230):

Computerworld is reporting that Windows XP Service Pack 3 runs MS Office 10% faster than XP SP2 (http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9048658&source=rss_news50) — and is 'considerably faster' than Vista SP1. XP SP3 isn't scheduled to be released until next year, but testers at Devil Mountain Software — the same company which found Vista SP 1 to be hardly any faster than the debut version (http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/11/23/1710245&tid=109) of Vista — were able to run some benchmarking tests on a release candidate of XP SP3, says the report. While this may be great news for XP owners, it is a problem for Microsoft, which is having trouble convincing business users to migrate to Vista (http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9046942).
