Wonder how fast it can go on the test track, but I predict it wouldn't be that extraordinary... :corn

Enzo is/was an asshole, period.

If he'd had his way, motorsports would still be financed solely by private investors throwing their own money in to beat each other.

There's a big reason that roadracing evolved in europe, and oval racing evolved in the USA.

On an oval, you can see the sponsors sticker from anywhere on the track :fact

well the need for ovals is gone... as we have a thing called "television" now. But reality is that oval tracks founded modern motorsports.

Why is that?

Why is that oval tracks founded modern motorsports? I'm not a fan of oval tracks, but I think I've to agree with Jr. If you look back in human history, from Asia to Europe, the first form of "racing" (i.e. horse pulling a car) is also done in some kind of circle or oval track... correct me if I'm wrong though, since I'm not that great in history knowledge... :mrgreen

yea, ovals are the traditional racetrack, because the crowd can see all the action without needing a TV or any other technology. And the modern motorsport set-up (team, driver, and sponsors to pay for it all) really got it's start there. In the early days in europe, it was dudes that had enough money to pay for everything themselves, racing against each other, or paying someone to race for them, with no real sponsors or team structure set-up, just a private "my horse is faster than your horse." kinda thing.

Now ofcourse it's grown beyond the ovals, but it's still "Team Monster Kawasaki" or "Team Vodafone Ferrari"

In the early days in Europe they raced on race tracks already that had curves in them etc. No ovals, but "proper" tracks already.

Or they raced in cities.

First official race is actually in France in 1894. Paris to Rouen or something I believe? Not sure but it did start in Paris if I remember right.

Not long after Le Mans was born, early 1920s they started to race there.

yea, that's true. But who payed for it all?

A lot of manufacturers did, I can't find any info on it. But the US was ahead early on with advertising in general, so probably sponsoring was more common there before it became the standard here.

I guess you had a lot of gentleman racers along side factory teams before other people got involved.

Just like motorcycle racing really, you ever see footage of Isle of Man many many decades ago? Hilarious to see that actually, it looks like they're racing around on bicycles. They were mostly rich people as well that found someone to race for them.

Mind you in a way that's an early form of sponsoring.

ya, I suppose it was. It really took all kinds to get it where it is now, current sponsorship stuff isn't always good, but it keeps everything paid for, and that's really (and unfortunatly) the biggest battle that racing has these days. Everytime you see rules come in to "cut costs" that's REALLY what it's all about :( :(

that said, I'm glad we don't race on ovals anymore, but I'm also glad that it's not all funded by "gentleman racers."

Yeah I agree. I wish it was even better but these days it's still hard to get going in racing.

I'd love it, I'm not good a motorcycle racing but on 4 wheels I'd love to give it a go. But the costs are just too great.

Nowadays you still need to be lucky and/or well connected to get somewhere.

I'd love to do Dakar, but the inscription fees alone are already about 40K. Let alone prepping a basic tropical landcruiser or something similar.

ya, no kidding man. I've thought of running dakar aswell, but it's huge money. I mean it'd without a doubt be a life altering event tho.

sadly... as you said, you gotta either win the lottery, or know someone.

Reventon challenged a Tornado this past week.

It managed to get a bit of a lead as it was quick off the line, but just before the finish line the Tornado overtook the Lambo doing over 340 km/h.
