Starting to look around at flat panel TV's. I have never bought a new TV in my life so I am not to up on what to look for. I was looking at a Sony 46" The KDL46W3000, always figured Sony to be a safe brand to go with and this one is currently on sale through dell for 1999 and free shipping. If I get it it will be a christmas present for the wife (depending on if we get bonuses this year at work.....:oh)

Make sure whatever you buy is HD capable. We're stuck with buying either a new TV, or at least a converter for ours ($70 appx.). Problem is that while our TV is less than 10 years old, it still works perfectly. It's a 27" RCA, and have had no complaints with it. Thankfully, we only have a couple of TV's in the house, and the only one that gets used is in our living room. Time to donate the other two before they're useless.

I'll have to keep an eye out on this as well. Supposedly, employees of the company I'm contracting at gets killer deals because they supply the coating for the screen. I'll be keeping an eye out on this, as Feb 17, 2009 isn't that far away.

My thoughts

Sony is making the best lcd's right now...
Make sure to get 1080p resolution if you want the best out there.
JVC also has some great lcd's as well, I just bought a JVC 1080p 37" for the bedroom for about 1100.00 It's an awesome TV for the money.
Watch out for the many models of Sony and make sure you know what your buying... There are so many models that are close to each other but bottom line is you get what you pay for.

I went through this a couple of years ago when I was building my house. I knew nothing about them. Go to www.avsforum.com (http://www.avsforum.com/) and research the models you are looking at. Tons of info on that site...as detailed as you want to get. Good luck.

Sony does good LCD's. If you go for a 50" plasma, go for a Panasonic full hd model.

TV's are not really important to me, I am 35 and have never bought a new one, so just considering buying a $2g flat panel is pretty big, the way I look at it we could have another bike or sled in the garage for that kind of money. :lmao

I'd never thought of buying a TV that expensive either, but I started asking for help about 6 months ago. I was sold on the fact that a rear projection couldn't match the image quality of an LCD or Plasma.....I was wrong. Budha told me to take a look at the new Mitsubishi rear projection TVs, and I was sold. DLP, 6 color mixing (versus the standard RP 3-color mixing) and full 1080p. Great thing is....there's no image distortion/delay or pixellation, and I got a 57" TV for less than $1900. My dad just threw $3700 into a 50" plasma, and he thinks the picture in my TV is better.

Here's the one I got....

i would disagree with Sony making the best LCD, personally i think Samsung has that game in the bag followed by Sony. LG, Sharp and Olevia are stepping up their game also. you really cant go wrong with any of them as long as you think the picture is good. setting the picture is the most critical thing followed by the distance. it needs to conform to your room. bigger is NOT better in the case of LCD as if you have a small room and you have a giant LCD you cant see it that well as the picture will be grainy. HDMI ports are becoming popular and like someone above said you will also need to get a digital receiver if you are not planning on cable or sat.

I think I may be leaning towards the Mitsubishi DLP that Mark posted. I need to go to the store and look at some of these things I think.

Another reason I didn't want a RP was because they traditionally have poor viewing quality at anything other than dead on front. The Mitsu RP is perfectly clear at even a 45 degree angle. :mrgreen

Glad I could help!

That is the issue I have with mine now, I have a Mitsubishi Diamond series 65" in the front room. After watching the lcd in the bedroom and then going to the front room the viewing angle sucks ass.... :( granted the 65" is about 3 years old, so back then the viewing angle was even worse.

I almost had to replace the 65" as it went out, but thankfully the extended warranty covered it and all is well now. I was looking at the lcd's as well for the front room though, mainly because of the viewing angle issue. Good to hear that the new RP Mitsu's are better.

Damn.....thought I had my mind made up till you guys brought up the veiwing angle issue. The way my room is set up that could be an issue. Ah well, I ll check em out in person at the store and see.

Whatever we wind up buying will need to be small and have a good viewing angle. The house we're in now is pretty big (400 sq. ft living room alone), but we're downsizing once our son is out of high school and moves out. So viewing angle will have to be something to look into.

If viewing angle is an issue make sure and see them for yourself like you said... The LCD I have in the bedroom is viewable at almost any angle that you can see the screen..... The one RP in the front room, is far from ok imo... you need to be directly in front of it.
