: Brake mod
quick6r 11-20-2007, 03:54 PM I have been looking over the bike for DIY mods to add some details. Looking at the rear brake assembly, I realized that I need to powdercoat the rear brake caliper bracket black for sure. Before I send it off for powder I want to chop it up a bit.
Looking at the following pics (and my piss poor attempt at editing), would the caliper remain strong enough, if the shaded areas were machined out of it?
R1 MASTER 11-20-2007, 04:40 PM Shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure you don't get into the main supports.
Ride safe.
rorlow 11-21-2007, 03:00 AM while you got the caliper off, you might want to send your rear rotor out for lightening too, would make for some nice details and a pretty inexpensive mod :yes

once I stop bouncing off the walls . . . its all good :laugh
Firehawk 11-21-2007, 08:48 AM Ahh...the old blue-pot calipers. Loved the way those looked.
Ya, like they said, be careful about removing too much material. Not sure how much you use the rear brake anyway, but anytime you weaken something you take a chance that it might fail on ya. at least those brake brackets are cheap on eBay.
Also....for a totally different look, the caliper adapter for 02-03's does fit the 98-01 swingarm. that puts the caliper on top of the swingarm, vice underneath. one of the things i originally thought about doing before I found the Yoyo adapter. you'd also need to use an 02-03 disc, which is 25mm smaller (220mm). you could probably find all those parts on ebay for about $100 (bracket, caliper, and rotor). :)
*edit* here's the whole assembly for $60...http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-YZF-R1-R-1-Rear-Brake-Caliper-and-Bracket_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ35592QQihZ020QQ itemZ300078209133QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V
and the rotor, $40....http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/YAMAHA-R1-YZFR1-1000-02-03-REAR-BRAKE-ROTOR-WHEEL-RIM_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ35601QQihZ008QQitem Z180036015733QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
you can see how much smaller the 220mm rotor looks than the 245mm :)
J Dollaz 11-21-2007, 08:55 AM Dont think it would even be noticable once Powder coated Black! $.02
But it does look nice just like that!
Firehawk 11-21-2007, 08:56 AM Dont think it would even be noticable once Powder coated Black! $.02
the 02-03 hardware is all black :)
rorlow 11-22-2007, 02:24 AM 02/03 rear brake assembly (caliper/rotor & bracket), 02/03 caliper is also a pin-slide style caliper vs. normal 2 piston :yes
quick6r 11-23-2007, 07:40 AM Ya, like they said, be careful about removing too much material. Not sure how much you use the rear brake anyway, but anytime you weaken something you take a chance that it might fail on ya. at least those brake brackets are cheap on eBay.
The only use that I have found for my rear brake is for the unfortunate off-track excursion :mrgreen.
I like the look of the caliper under the swingarm, so I think that I will keep the same setup rather than switching to the 02-03 bracket. Good to know that it will fit.
Can anyone recomend a rotor lightening service? I have seen a few individuals that will do it, but I haven't heard any feedback about the results.
fjorn 11-23-2007, 07:53 AM Once the bracket is powder coated (I'd actually anodize it myself), it wouldn't be noticeable. Also, as stated, you run the risk of weakening the bracket too much. While I tended to use the front almost exclusively, I used the rear in emergency situations so there was still plenty of force used upon them.
Unless you're an "A" class rider, I wouldn't worry about rotor lightening or caliper bracket modifications too much. The weight reduction is pretty minimal at best, and the safety factor might not be worth the compromise.
quick6r 11-23-2007, 02:17 PM Thank for the input. I'm not worried about the weight savings, as much looking for little details that might look trick.
I like that fact that the bracket wouldn't be noticable in black............. thats the point.
rorlow 11-26-2007, 02:46 AM the person you really need to talk to about brake mods is Kenshin . . . he can hook you up bro :bow
blur1 11-26-2007, 02:59 AM :imwst yep, you need to p.m kenshin, i'm sure he has done this mod... and others.:yes

quick6r 11-26-2007, 07:55 AM Probably not, Kenshin has plenty of trouble with his own brakes from what I hear :moon

gsxcorey 11-30-2007, 08:15 AM One thing you can do also that imo is pretty slick is have greggs customs powdercoat and brace your swingarm. Had them do it to my 99 r1 and turned out great.
quick6r 11-30-2007, 10:45 AM Thats on my wish list for sure. Black frame and braced swinger .................. unless Harris has a serious clearance sale :oh
