Anyone going to see it next week?

Hopefully this won't be a severe disappointment like what "Pathfinder" was.

adds look awesome....at least the visuals are stunning. i'd love to go, but i know it's not the wife's cup of tea.

of course, they had to drop the "I AM BEOWULF" line in there that will no doubt be manipulated all over youtube to techno music and the like.

The mother in this version is much hotter than the one in 2005 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0402057/)... :crash

It can't be any worse than the 1999 crapfest (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120604/) starring Christopher Lambert (but not one that's such a crapfest I won't watch it -- it's a funny kind of bad, and there's one set of :faceboobs in there so it's at least tolerable).... The CG looks pretty slick though. I'll probably see it at some point.

I'll probably go see it, but I don't really like it when they use CG to enhance the actors looks...Looks animated to me..

Pick up the book and learn the story. You'd actually be interested in seeing the movie then as well.

Beowulf is far and away my favourite book of all time. Completely shaped literature from there on out.

how about some1 here tell me the main plot of the movie.

I haven't seen the movie, but here's a brief synopsis of the book

Act 1
Big king has a problem in the form of a troll that's kicking the shit out of him and his people. He gives a call to his nephew, Beowulf, who basicly comes, saves the uncle, kills the troll (grendel) by pulling it down from the rafters so hard that it leaves an arm dangling up there. Troll crawls off and dies of it's wounds.

act 2

Grendels mum comes to town pissed off 'cause Beowulf left the arm dangling from the rafters where everyone can have a good party in the mead hall and celebrate the fact that he's dead and they're free. Mummy comes in, takes the arm, kills some dudes and books for her underwater cave. Beowulf tracks her down and kills her

Act 3: this is where it gets innovative and interesting, and odds are the movie won't cover.
Ragnar (the uncle) grew old and passed the kingdom on to his favourite little kingdom saving nephew. Many years down the road, old king Beowulf has a big problem in the form of a dragon that's come to town and is thrashing shit up. Try as he might, he's unable to slay the big fugger. BUT as luck would have it, he's got a nephew.... nephew comes, sees, conquers, but in the process of slaying the dragon, Beowulf dies, passing his sword and kingdom onto the nephew. Thus bringing the story full circle, and taking a hero from the young upstart world saver, to the old king passing the kingdom onto his star nephew on his deathbed. Definitely the first time in literature that I've seen it, and actually one of the best done. Particularly since it was done in old english (like as in before the saxons did some come-see-conquer of their own and fubar'd the language.)

Wonder 1:

In the movie you told me to watch, Grendel cut off his own arm to escape. I wonder how he will lose his arm in the new movie? :crash

Wonder 2:

In the new movie trailer, we can see a dragon, not sure if that's the same as the ending you posted.

It's definitely an incredible read. Think of it as being similar in reading to Homer's "Iliad", TH White's "The Once and Future King", etc. I've enjoyed it since I was a kid.

This is the version I have of the book now: Beowulf (Bi-Lingual version) (http://www.amazon.com/Beowulf-New-Verse-Translation-Bilingual/dp/0393320979/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-7253635-0543010?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1194671972&sr=1-1)

I read it in an English literature class several years back. Honestly, I do think it's pretty cool that a story of such literary importance (other than Shakespeare) is still getting attention in mainstream media.

Anyone wanting to learn more about the history of the story or the story itself (beware spoilers if you want to experience it for the first time in the theater), the wikipedia article on the original work (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beowulf) is pretty good.

BTW, Junior, I've read the last part of the story in a few different versions. The book I have now, I'm not certain if it has it or not as I haven't read the book yet. I'm still working my way through "A History of the Vikings". Pretty slow going...

I'd probably throw "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" on that list as well.

The book I'm currently reading, "A History of the Vikings", says that while much of the story of Beowulf is fictional. There are indeed many factual components of the story. The characters, places, and the armies fought against (not trolls, dragons, etc) are historically correct.

However, since it is a fictional story of sorts, they are not using it as anything other than a questionable resource at best. Had there have not of been other documentation/historical resources to coincide with characters of the story, it would have been discounted entirely.

I'd probably throw "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" on that list as well.

Haven't read that one, might have to throw it on my "to read" list. But, do you have "Rime" spelled correctly? Shouldn't it be "Rhyme"?

Yeah, it really is "Rime". It's another bit of poetry, but another quite significant piece of English Lit. Google Books has the whole thing online (http://books.google.com/books?id=P-SS1-BdLNUC&dq=rime+of+the+ancient+mariner&pg=PP1&ots=pH8A38H_yO&sig=bLfW16EZhhQANqrmpxivYAY9pig&prev=http://www.google.com/search%3Fq%3Drime%2Bof%2Bthe%2Bancient%2Bmariner%2 6ie%3Dutf-8%26oe%3Dutf-8%26aq%3Dt%26rls%3Dorg.debian:en-US:unofficial%26client%3Diceweasel-a&sa=X&oi=print&ct=title&cad=one-book-with-thumbnail). The Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rime_of_the_Ancient_Mariner) on this piece seems pretty decent as well.

Iron Maiden actually did a song based on it...but I'm absolutely not posting a youtube vid 'cause none of us really need to see any more 80's hair metal dudes running around in spandex. :mrgreen

I actually never got that into Iliad and Odyssey, dunno why but they never did anything for me.

Junior
11-10-2007, 07:37 AM
Actually, I take that back, Iliad was pretty good, Odyssey sucked.

"as there can be no trustworthy oathes between men and lions, there can be no love between you and I."

Seriously tho, I got the feeling that Iliad was an author attempting to explain a siege, but not really understanding what was going on. I mean last time I checked, when you attack a medieval city, the best way to do it is to surround it and keep food from getting in.... not hanging out on the beach and waiting for them to come out and play.
