NICKY IRL 03-20-2010, 01:40 PM Hi people new here, i am at my witts end with a quad i bought its a 2005 yfz 450, when running for a while it gets hard to start it has a hot start lever but no cable,i can buy one but have no idea where to put it or where it goes there seems to be a few parts missing on the carb but again i have no idea what the parts are.The parts are 32 33 34 54 has any one any idea what these parts are any help will be apreciated.:hammerhead:hammerheadhttp://www.bikebandit.com/assets/schematics/Yamaha/YA-20050000019668.gif
macattack 03-20-2010, 06:14 PM those parts are part of the choke I believe . listed as starter plunger. the actual choke knob is perpendicular but seems move the part #32 when pulled out and that part is listed as the plunger.
I think your atv never came with a hot start (at least mine didn't ) , it was not needed because of the electric start . if it is running bad when hot you need to look for a cause.

#14 ^ is the parking brake lever .
NICKY IRL 03-21-2010, 05:42 AM This is the item on my bike, the previous owner told me it was a hot start lever and there was a cable on it but he cant remember where it goes.,or where i can get one.6271
macattack 03-21-2010, 06:39 AM here is a diagram of a 05 yz450 dirtbike carb.
in order to do a hot start on the atv the previous owner would have had to do some sort of conversion .

go to here: Yamaha
look up the exploded view of the carb on an05 dirtbike see where the cable goes and see what parts are on your carb .
yamaha's website has a listing for parts and part numbers .
I think It is possible to put a hotstart on the atv but I am not sure it is ever needed. I run the piss out of mine and it never fails to start.
if you have electric start the hot start should not be necessary.
IMO .

yamaha actually sells a kit to install the hotstart option.
but if you notice it says :
This function can be necessary to start your motor with the kick start lever.
as I was saying earlier there is no reason for a hot start lever if you have electric start.
the conversion Yamaha sells is for the people who remove the starter and install a kick start conversion that need the hot start option to get it started .
if you are having such problems you probably really need to get to the reason for the problem .
maybe your quad is in need of a valve adjustment .
I'm confident you do not need a hot start when your atv has electric start.
NICKY IRL 03-21-2010, 01:12 PM Cheers dave i think you could be right i have the electric start it is just after screwing the ring out of it for a while it is a basta*d to start maybe i should start with the valves it is just that the parts in the carb are not actually in my carb they are missing,im not sure if they are ment to be there or not.
macattack 03-21-2010, 04:41 PM Yeah it's tough sometimes to tell what the previous owner has done.
good luck hope it is an easy fix . :beer
NICKY IRL 03-22-2010, 03:34 PM cheers dave

itsmygame 03-24-2010, 09:52 PM my 06 does not have a hot start either. It fires every time. Check the carb settings.
NICKY IRL 03-27-2010, 07:09 PM Right guys seem to have a new problem, the yfz refuses to start easy she will crank and crank she will bang and backfire but wont start, but the strange one is if i get a tow it will start within a few yards and runs fine but the other thing i noticed is when she is running and i pull out the choke it seems to make no difference to the bike at all the revs just dont seem to move at all any ideas guys or have i just bought a right shit box alltogether

this could still be a sign that you are in need of a valve adjustment.
this is the usual symptoms the motor gives when the valves are in need of adjustment or replacement.
I have yet to experience it with my 450 but I've been seeing it frequently with mx bikes at the track.
the other thing to think about is It could be a combo of things
for example:
weak battery and a tired motor means the only way to start the atv is if it is getting a pull start.
Obviously it could be other things.
the choke thing for example with a run rough situation would seem to indicate a carb problem , its just the way it runs intermittently and under certain situations leads me to believe it is valve related.
itsmygame 03-28-2010, 08:32 PM After you tow start the beast pullon the choke to see if there is a diff in the engine sound. Making sure the choke works. there is a start jet in the carb too. Clean all those jets, might be pluged.
Be careful on how tight you get those brass jets. Do not ask how I know.
NICKY IRL 03-29-2010, 04:36 PM Right guys checked valves they are miles out shims are on order i also removed the carb to clean it, it looks like a cow shat in the bowl:mrgreen i have clean it out but have to bring it to a mate who knows about carbs and jets n shit it seems a lot of the crap is getting in through the hole where this supposedly hot start cable goes i may get a cap for it,oh yeah and the battery is wank*d,i hope thats all is wrong if not im buying a honda:mrgreen:mrgreen:mrgreen:mrgreen:mrgreen
