Just bought a used 86 yz80. Can i just use any 2 cycle oil? Is 32:1 a good mixture for this bike?

Thanks

there is a short list of oils you should not run and a long list of oils you can/should run.
to make it easy I would go to a yamaha dealer and buy a few bottles of yamalube 2r two stroke premix oil and mix it
between 28:1 and 32:1 which is 4gal of gas to 16 oz of oil

ratio rite™ cups are real handy for fuel ratio/mixing and usually sold at motorcycle shops

thanks, I'll pick up some yamalube today at the cycle shop.

just don't go with a castor oil if you live in a cold climate.

i agree i would stick with yamalube. stay away from klotz. i had a banshee and i ran it 32-1 but im pretty sure its 16 ounces to 5 gals.

Ironically I ran klotz in all my twostrokes , but only recommended yamalube because it would be easier with ratios and jetting instructions.
Klotz is fine if you know how to jet/tune for it depending on which klotz oil you run.

aftermarket oils are harder to get right because they react different to standard mixing procedures .

I ran R50 at 40:1 and had no problems It is a 50 weight oil thou and it is recommended for racing applications .

man I just realized how nice metric is for mixing. I didn't realize you guys did it in ounces and gallons.

can't speak for the US but up here, Yamalube is repackaged Imperial Oils (ergo, Exxon) 2-stroke oil.

Not that that's necessarily good or bad, just sayin.

well sort of , here the manufactures Honda, Yamaha ,, etc. commission a company like general petroleum to mix a formula to their specs. I would guess ESSO does the same for Canada . so its probably not technically repackaged it is probably mixed to yamaha's specs if Yamaha is doing the talking. but since there is little to be added to a petroleum 2-stroke oil It may be the exact same formula as their brand of oil.

actually the base stock of oil from any bottle of any oil could originate from the same place.

Its even possible that your favorite (I think) Amsoil base ester comes from the same plant as silkolene or klotz . Amsoil does not have a refinery they just mix the stuff up just like Esso does for Yamaha Cd - yamalube , the difference is the ingredients .
same goes from fuel vp does not own a refinery so its base fuel comes from the same place as any of its competitors usually a big company like phillips for example.

yea for sure. I run amsoil altho I'm not terribly loyal based on the oil, just that it's a full synth that is generally very available at the track. I'm more worried about having the same stuff consistently available than I am about what stuff exactly it is that I'm using.

and same goes for the VP altho their supply system has been pretty spotty of late, there's some new regs in Ontario regarding insurance for storing fuel that's apparently making it very difficult for "small" shops to store it.
