I may be wrong on this, but typical rear spring sag is about 90-95mm. At least that's what I recall for my '05 250F and '07 450F.

The 96-98YZ have a range of adjustability of 90-100mm. 90mm will help turn in, 100 will help with stability and traction but you may tend to run wide on corner exits. (yes thats 3 9/16" - 4")

The owners manual on the dirt bikes is basically a service manual. Yamaha Australia has many owners manuals hosted in the support are of their website here:
Yamaha Motor Australia, Motorcycles, Marine, Power Products and Golf (http://www.yamahaownershandbook.com.au/index.php?BRSR=0)
the US 1998YZ250 is the YZ250K.

I assume that the above link is OK as it is hosted by Yamaha themselves...Yamaha USA will not let you view it.

If this is a problem please remove and disregard.

I like to go a fair bit less than that myself, more like 50-60mm, I like 'em to flip in aggressivly tho.

But for most dirtbikes the first suspension mod you do is a link to raise the rear, same effect on chassis geometry.

Seriously tho I have rather strange taste in chassis set-ups. It's something you might want to play with and see what you're most comfortable with, try it cranked right up and cranked right down and then go looking for a setting you like.
