you shouldn't ride the bike until you get a grip on how and what maintenance is done or is needed.
If you are talking about a Yz250f
the oil changes should be done very frequently per the service manuals specs.
the service manual has detailed steps on how to change the oil.
it is very involved and must be done exactly the way it is detailed.
the reservoir you were referring to (i think) is NOT something you add oil to on any regular basis other than if your bike is using oil. the way you worded it It made it sound like you have confused this with a two stroke injection tank.
this reservoir is simply part of the dry sump system and gets drained with the oil change. (its also a place to check the oil level)
I change the oil and filter after every hard ride or two and clean the air filter every ride ( a must)
yamalube 20/50 works for me.

also
the way the oil level is checked IIRC on that bike is somewhat involved .
I think its like- idle for a few minutes -shut off the bike, then pull the dipstick from the reservoir and check . I think it can't be checked cold .
another good reason to get a service manual you will use it a lot.
and the bike are different from year to year.
good luck.

thanks for the info ,i was just wondering about oil levels in the front reservoir ,i checked it cold and was just wondering if there was oil i had to add in there.this 01 has very little hours on it and i wanted to do a oil and filter change before i go away next week.i was a little confused with the tank ,it made me second guess myself.i have maybe 2 hours on it since oil was changed and filter.i just wanted to make sure and to get opinions on the best oil to use or if there is a preference in very dusty conditions. thanks alot for the info.

Yeah the dry sump system is freaky.
A well oiled fresh air filter Is a good idea.
It's important to run a motor oil that is made for motorcycles
and the right viscosity. Another reason to run Yamalube .
Every time I ride it's extremly dusty conditions. Not sure it affects the motor oil as much as the condition of the air filter.
Most major engine problems with modern 4strokes (I've seen) involves dirt getting past the airfilter.
Congrats on the new bike
have fun
