{edit} Bike: 2000 YZF-600 R Thundercat

Just bought a bike that is under respects through lemon laws i havent even rode the thing off the street infront of my home (1 mile) and i heard a "fan" like noise when i looked down i saw it was WAAY past 100 degress celcius and into the redline area (of the temp gauge) now i stopped ridding and let it sit, i put the kick stand down and waited bout five mins and the bike would bounce between 100 cel. and red area. Shutting the bike off i discoverd leaving the power on (just bat no engine) kept the fan going which was the only thing that lowerd the heat below 100 and to zero.

Calld the SOB back he claims this to be normal, common sense tells me otherwise (also low ridding exp)

Calld a yamaha master tech at 3 diff dealerships they all claimed this to be horrificly wrong even said my idle was high (21k rpms) so im not sure if they were just trying to get the bike in for $ in parts and service or if there serously are bad problems with this lemon.
I want to hear feed back before i file a VPP and a LEMON Law with this old hic

Attempts taken:
~Checked coolant -Level ok! it is 50/50

~Checked choke - choke is completly off when it over heats

Main symptoms:
~heats way past 100c
-- no stunts performed to cause it to over heat (Hi revs, wheelies "fast" riding)

~A Fan like noise is can be observed the moment the temp excedes 95c ((common sense tells me this to be a COOLING FAN of some sort))

~Will cool down [I]only when bat. is on (engine off) and the fan is running

~Will heat to 100c and above just by idle alone longer than 20 mins or more

Am i just a noob or should i smoke this guy? :guns

relax .

yes your idle sounds high.

but it cant be 21000 it must be 2100

high idle could be part of your problem.

and 20 minutes is a long time to let a bike idle.

my bike will kick over 100˚ c in less than ten minutes at idle. and at stop and go traffic it hovers around there all the time with the fans running .

once at that temp sitting shut off on a calm day it would probably take ten min for it to drop to below 95˚ c .
the heat gets trapped under the one place the temp is measured. once you cycle the fan it helps remove some of that heat so of course it is going to drop the temp by running the fan.

get your idle checked (or adjust it yourself)to see what the correct rpm setting should be, and only let your bike idle for a few minutes to 60˚ C before take off.

if your bikes that hot from sitting in traffic and you could get it up to speed(say 50mph) the temp would drop down to normal operating temp somewhere near 65˚C.
letting it idle too long then sitting at slow or stopped speeds , with possibly a high idle is my guess to what caused the problem.
hope that helps.

"normal operating temp somewhere near 65˚C"
You have calmed me down and i have retired the angry mob i had ready to ride on this dude (buying from him was a hassle!) tomorow i shall go on a decent ride and check the temp to see if its around 60 -70c

"get your idle checked (or adjust it yourself)to see what the correct rpm setting should be"
A yamaha master tech told me the idle should be around 1400rpm

"my bike will kick over 100˚ c in less than ten minutes at idle. and at stop and go traffic it hovers around there all the time with the fans running"
That makes me feel even better, it appears my noob is showing as a bike is far different from a car. & i belive a actual ride is in need my only fear is damaging the bike worse or having it break down on me.

good to hear your calmed down, I tend to fly off sometimes too. lol
and it is apparently a normal reaction to having a sportbike for the first time.
If you are thinking you are not ready to ride the bike on the open road don't do it till you are comfortable .
it will cruze around at slow speeds fine just don't let it build up so much heat from idling for long periods of time. turn the idle down and cruise around in a parking lot until you are ready or go to a motorcycle safety course.

Went for a 102 mile ride today, only reason i got off was because my fuel light came on (there wasnt much in there to begin with) and my temp stayed well below 80c" it was jumping from 70 to 75

Thanks! :closed
