YZ is Yamahas designation for race bikes. The F stands for four stroke. The YZR stands for Yamaha's YZ racebike that is for road courses. The Yami dirt bike is actually named YZ250F. In the past the road racing bikes were designated OW-xx like the OW-01 which was a FZR750RR in '89. Some Japanese words do not translate to English very well. Most of these designations are for the overseas market. Before 1981 here in the US and currently in Japan, the frame number started with the model designation for Honda. Like the RC30 for the VFR750RR and RC51 for the RVT1000.
