Could the PC have anything do with it? Mines is pretty ancient.

i wonder if running through a wireless b router has anything to do with it

From my experience that will slow it down a little if you are in the higher speeds.

At home:

http://www.speedtest.net/result/199819155.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

I still need to go through and replace the crappy wiring between my router and phone box on the side of the house. They replaced the wiring from the house to the phone junction box a couple of years ago.

LAN only means "Local Area Network". I know many smaller places that use a fractional T1, ISDN, business cable, or DSL line for all of their internet traffic. Many companies also restrict, or throttle back, their browsing traffic (port 80 outbound) down significantly to prevent people from browsing and eating up all the network. They save the majority of the speed for clients to connect in, or for backend transmissions such as bank transfers, orders, etc.

It could be dependent upon how long you've had your service. Some ISP's don't force the updated speed, and rely upon when the modem reconnects. Usually, when I hear about something like this, I recommend people shut down their cable modem and computer for a couple of minutes. Then, power up the modem, then the computer and try again. Most times that fixes the issue.

If not, it could be bad wiring, or going through a different route like R1Lover mentioned.

WTF Val - Does everyone in Honk Kong get those kind of connection speeds?

Actually I only took a low-end 25 Mbps package from my ISP (http://www.hkbn.net/index_e.htm)... :lol

They actually offer 100 and 1000 Mbps for home, but I just don't see the need, especially most of my browsing are oversea websites, there is no way I can get those speed to oversea anyway... :comp

Not sure if you saw this, but I posted this thread (http://www.sportbikeforum.net/showthread.php?t=26012) last month about Verizon in the US is now offering similar 20 Mbps plan for home... :comp

Yeah, I cant get Verizon in my area though, they wont come in to an area that has AT&T. Not sure what that is about but they seem to have some kind of agreement with each other.

You have to have fiber to your home and not many people do.

Proximity won't necessarily have much to do with it, especially not on cable. Cable companies generally make a single run into individual areas, and everyone fed in that area shares the bandwidth off that run. Some areas have more subscribers and therefore more people trying to use the same pipe. Some areas have some heavier users, which may also affect you. So...your speed will be influenced more by how oversubscribed your area is and what kind of usage others in your area are putting out, and less by your proximity to things.

Oversubscription, while it generally sounds like a bad idea to the average joe, is how ISPs make their money. They sell service to more people than can all use the service at the same time, on the principle that while there may be peak and low usage periods, there's a very minimal chance that *everyone* is going to be on at the exact same time attempting peak usage. The problem comes when they oversubscribe lines *too* much and it starts saturating their feeds frequently...as the local cable carrier around these parts has been known to do quite a bit. That just means companies like the one I work for get more business selling DSL, T-1 and other hi-capacity services. :mrgreen
