Just wanted to say hey, I just got this '01 250 and probably have some stupid questions for ya. I'm looking for a new set of rims for this bike, exhaust and pipe, as well as a great sprocket/chain kit. I'm up for any suggestions here. I'm not sure on the stock gearing of the bike. The previous owner told me that it has a -1 / +4 gearing, and to me (I used to own a 600 sportbike) seems excessive. I've only ridden on the dirt one time though, so I'm not sure if that is normal or not. But the bike seems to top off pretty quickly. I'm not quite sure on the differences between the FMF pipes, prices seem to be about the same, any difference in performance? I'm sure I'll have more questions but I'm going to start off with those parts first. Thanks guys.

the gearing the previous owner had would have made the bike better for a real tight track with smaller runs at bigger jumps.
but like you said it would seem like you would be shifting all the time.
I like to be able to find a gear ratio that allows me to stay in one gear for long periods of time. lol

the difference between the narly and fat and whatever other models of fmf pipe there are is the hit and low end grunt characteristics of each .the different shape of the expansion chamber changes the hit of the motor down low grunt or top end hit. they could call them sx mx and woods and it would make more sense.
I liked the one with more bottom grunt end and less top end, and a pro would probably like the one with more top end . I had the fatty pipe on my 01yz250 and loved it.

the problem with replacing rims is:
its time consuming to re lace a rim -so expensive

so the better answer is replace the rim and hub with a excel and tallon hub that comes in a pre asembled kit.
$800 rear $700 front retail.
caution in trying to find a cheap name brand some of the lesser priced kits use a universal hub with a adaptor for each model of bike needless to say it doesnt work very well and could end up hurting you .

Thanks for the quick reply. Now is there a difference between the gold series fatty or factory fatty? And when buying pipes and the exhaust do I need any gaskets, or anything of that such a long with the purchase. I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy 2 new springs for the pipe, but not sure on anything else. Yeah I know nothing about lacing when I was looking at those rims, I would have to get the rim the spokes and hub already put together. I may save rims for when I need to replace the tires. I have a whole bunch of other parts that I'm looking at that I can get now and wait on those later.

I think there is a gasket (s) where the head pipe meets the cylinder . I honestly don't remember how critical it is to replace them so I would do it just incase.

there is a rubber hose like gasket on the stock exhaust between the expansion chamber and the muffler, again I can not remember if you need to use that with the aftermarket exhaust but the exhaust but the instructions say whether or not and I think you use it on the aftermarket pipe , but you wont have to buy a new one unless yours is torn or damaged because it is reusable . and I think it comes with new springs. from fmf website=*Install the OEM pipe coupler, if applicable, at the pipe to silencer junction

the gold vs the other would be the finish on the pipe
factory fatty is non plated un finished raw metal
and gold fatty is plated shiny chrome

Thanks everybody. And thanks for the quick replies macattack. Well I'm going with the Gold Series and new O rings and new connector. So in the meantime this is my list of parts that I want to replace, add any or subtract any if you see neccesary. Air Filter, New gripper seat, blue radiator hoses, skid plate, ASV Brake and Clutch levers, Chain and Sprocket Kit, Plastics/Graphics kit, and a new Bar Cover, and new grips. That's pretty much it for now, in the future once I get used to riding probably change out the brake lines and pads, then the rims and tires like noted from before. What about reeds, if it's an '01 and has been through 2 owners and the stock one is still on, should I see about replacing that too?? Thanks again guys.
