I picked up a 97 YZF750 for fun. Currently trying to get it started. I have fuel, spark, and motor seems to have decent or at least consistant compression.
I cannot get it to fire, even with starting fluid. It is in neutral and does spark but I get no neutral light. I am wondering if a faulty neutral sensor would keep the bike from starting even if I get a decent spark on all four cylinders.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Another question is the EXUP. It does not move. I imagine that it is centered and does not need to reset when I turn on the ignition but wanted to ask what the normal condition is when you do turn the key on.

When I changed the head gasket on my 94 I had that same problem...... The timing could be of a little or even 180 degrees. Once we got all that figured out then it started right up..... the timing should not be that far off unless the cams were taken off. Let me know what you find out..... Jake

Thanks. I guess I will be cracking into it. I am not sure if anyone has been into the motor but I guess I will find out. Has anyone seen a decent PDF manual online?

Any word on getting that thing started? I've been thinking about it. I even asked the guy that helped me with mine, and he says the same thing. Just wondering.... let me know.

Not yet, I have been traveling this week. I will get into it this weekend and update. I will first look at ignition timing, then cam timing.
Thanks,
Ed

I thought the neutral saftey switch just takes the spark away from the engine? If you have spark I wouldnt think that would be the problem. I'm probably wrong, but thats just what I was thinking.:shrug

Good thought, I think that stops it from turning over though IIRC?

The pickup coil on the right side. I pulled it out. I imagine this is a hall effect sensor. On the inside, there is a magnet. Is it supposed to be flush with the housing, or did mine pop off? I have not found a manual yet. An online fiche show a magnet sticking up a bit, mine is flush with some goop around it.
Has anyone taken theirs out?
Thanks,
Ed
May sound stupid, but have you cleaned out the carbs completely? These bikes are notorious for having the pilot jets plug up. Just a thought.

Yes, I have been through the carbs. I have a ensured all passages are clear. The reason I think this a pulse coil problem, or possible cam timing problem is because I cannot even get a pop or backfire using ether. I do have spark but it may not be strong enough, or is erratic.
It does not appear that anyone has been into this motor so I am putting cam timing on the back burner and checking the easy stuff. I am going to pull out my meter and start checking the ignition coils and will test the pulse coil. I just need a visual on the magnet at the end of it to see if mine popped off.
I may have some coils if that is your problem, let me know.
