sky1118 09-22-2008, 07:11 PM ok another newbie question...
what r good brands to go with?? from ur experiance that is.
R1 MASTER 09-22-2008, 07:33 PM :hello and :welcome to YFN
Tires depend on the type of riding you intend to do. Pirelli makes a great tire with the Diablo Corsa III and Bridgestone has new tire this year with the BT016. Both are multi-compound tires with soft sides and harder center for long life on the street or track but neither are a full DOT race tire. :thumbup
Ride safe.
syncitizen 09-22-2008, 09:08 PM Welcome to the YFN community !!!
Definitely a handful for your first bike. Be safe, be aware, and respect the machine :thumbup
BTW, there's no such thing as to much knowledge so feel free to ask as many questions as you want.

An yea the bike is a handfull. but ill take care of her an respect her.
an i need a new helmet. cuz the one i have now is to big. it came with the bike. anyone know where to get a helmet. An i want to take the bike in to a dealer or bike shop an have them check it an make sure everything is in good working order.. do u think thats a good idea.. or should i find somone who knows what they r doing to look at it.?? Sorry if these questions sound stupid an newbie. Im just new an kinda scared/excited an want to make sure i get everything covered.
Thanks ,
Aaron :scooter
syncitizen 09-23-2008, 08:20 PM Be careful where you take your bike to get checked out. If Minnesota is anything like Vegas (M/C shop wise) there are some shady or worse yet, incompetent mechanics. You should find a forum in your area and ask where your local riders get there service done and the shops they avoid. Aaron, the only stupid question is the one you don't ask. One of the many things I've always loved about the general m/c lifestyle is the sharing of knowledge. Before long you'll have your own experiences and insights to pass down to future riders. Believe me, we were all newbies at one time.
gcain 09-24-2008, 01:58 AM POST PICS!!!
Welcome to the forum! :)
(Just want to clarify I'm talking about the bike... :lol )

Hey Aaron. Depending on where you are in MN, there's some great options for you. If you're in the TC area, I'd say make a trip over to Bob's Cycle (http://www.bobscycle.com/) off of Hwy 36 and Rice in Little Canada. They've got a great selection of parts, gear and accessories.
Being that you are new to riding, I'm hoping you took the MSF safety course. If not, it's a great introductory course. From there, you can take the advanced rider course to expand on your skills.
Also, take a look at ridingcourse.com (http://ridingcourse.com) for technical riding dates. These will help your skills out immensely. Currently the season is done. But, there's always next year. Oh, and keep an eye out for Pat Hahn's Hedonistic Enthusiasm (http://www.hedonistic-enthusiasm.com/) held in May. It's a great chance to learn with some terrific CRA racers as well as MSF rider's coaches.
For repair shops, I can't think of any off the top of my head for independant shops that I'd recommend. The one I used to deal with was in MPLS but closed. But, if you don't mind dealerships, St. Bonifacious Yamaha is supposed to be very good. On the north side, I deal with Waldoch's quite often.

fjorn 09-24-2008, 10:23 AM Nice looking bike. But, at the same time am a bit concerned because it's a former stunt bike. The 12 o'clock bar on the back, and the fact that the sliders are off and it's been repainted makes me wonder what kind of damage it has under the skins.
sky1118 09-24-2008, 10:32 AM uh ohhhh.. that doesnt sound good. :hung

Ok so this post got me really scared. so i took all the plastic off an im going to take pic's when i can find the stupid camera an post them. an hopefully everyone can take a look an tell me if somthing is messed up. I have been lookin carefully all around the bike now. an i haven't found anything that looks like its in bad shape.I found some scrapes an stuff but thats its. An since this is my first bike i would like other ppls opinions. All other opinions r excepted 100 percent.
Thanks,
Aaron :scooter
syncitizen 09-24-2008, 01:44 PM LOL it may be fine. Probably previously owned by a wannabe stunter. Not a scratch on the 12 bar. I see a fair number of bikes with cages and 12 bars that never even get up on one wheel. Some posers just think they look cool and bolt em on.
In the future, thoroughly check for frame damage and tell tale scratches near the end of swingarm, engine casings, and the front forks near the axle. These are the points that tend to hit first and can be signs of more serious and less noticeable damage since they stick out the most.
Since you already have the holes in the fairings you should really consider putting sliders back on. Probably one of the first things IMO that you should do to upgrade and protect your bike. It doesnt matter if your a new rider or seasoned. We all drop bikes and sliders will save you tons of money and tears from simple tip overs and slow speed slides.

sky1118 09-24-2008, 01:54 PM ok everyone get ready to laugh... is the 12 bar the thing on the back. on the tailend?
cuz ts not even missing any paint.
syncitizen 09-24-2008, 02:24 PM 12 0'clock bar is supposed to be used for doing very high wheelies and give you a reference point when it hits or scrapes the ground and perhaps to help keep you from doing a total loop on the bike.
Yes its that big ass bar on the rear end. If your not stunting its basically nothing more than something to add a lot of weight to what is designed to be a lightweight bike and can actually make it slightly more prone to loop due to all the extra weight on the rear. I'd suggest removing and maybe selling it. You could use the money from that to replace the rear plastics that were cut to install the 12 bar.
I will add that at least from the pics it look like someone went through a lot of trouble to make nice, clean cuts to install it... also a sign that it may not of been a real stunt bike and more for posing. Did the guy you buy it from also have one of them fancy mohawks on his helmet too?? LOL
sky1118 09-24-2008, 05:56 PM does anyone know how much those things weigh? just curious.
I'll plan to remove it once i find a peice to go inplace of the old one. Where would i find one of those anyways? i have tried to search for them. but not having any luck:notworking
How much r sliders usually?
an to be totally honest... his friend had a black helmet with a mohawk on it. So.... :rolleyes
Aaron :scooter
fjorn 09-24-2008, 06:39 PM Probably no more than a few pounds. But, being that they stick out farther than the tail, it can add some leverage. More so when/if the foot is placed on them. If you want to remove it, I would think it'd be okay being that it's a clean install. The grooves won't be too obvious I don't think.
Sliders about $50-75 on average I think. Be sure to get a good quality brand. Syn can fill you in on the brand.
sky1118 09-24-2008, 07:53 PM haha alright. Ill wait for the Great Syn to come lead the way.
lvshell 09-25-2008, 08:06 AM haha alright. Ill wait for the Great Syn to come lead the way.
:lol Welcome to YFN!
syncitizen 09-25-2008, 08:32 AM :blush .... not great, just got some opinions is all. Keep in mind thats all they are and that people here have differing ones based on their own experiences.
On that note. My recommendations for some quality sliders are:
Motovation (http://www.motovationusa.com/mvstore/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=153) I just crash tested a set of these and they did their job admirably.
I couldnt find alot of options for the 2000 R1. You may want to ask the previous owner what he had on there before.
A few other quality brands in general, but couldn't find ones that stated they fit your bike.
Graves (http://www.gravesport.com/Products/FrameSavers.shtml)
Woodcraft (http://www.woodcraft-cfm.com/Scripts/prodList.asp?idCategory=12764)
... Anyone else have ideas for the 00'?
shagzomatic 09-25-2008, 08:42 AM :+1 on Motovation. I have a set of their rear axle sliders.
My frame sliders are FS6, but their site doesn't have '00 R1 listed either.
sky1118 09-25-2008, 09:56 AM Alright well ill look at the motovation ones. an see what i can find. hopefully i can have them ordered by sat.
sky1118 09-25-2008, 04:39 PM Sliders r on there way.
Anything else u guys recommend?
fjorn 09-25-2008, 05:08 PM Might want to look into some maintenance items:
Bleed brakes and check pads for replacement
Fuel filter
Also, find out how to set up your suspension for your weight. This will give you a decent base to start from for when you get your suspension reworked. You're going to want to do your suspension eventually. If nothing else, just to change oil.
sky1118 09-26-2008, 05:18 PM ok checked my brakes. they r looking good.
had my cousin come over. has been riding for about 5 years. an kinda knows some stuff.
now whats this with the suspension??
fjorn 09-26-2008, 09:49 PM YouTube videos covering motorcycle suspension tuning (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=motorcycle+suspension+tuning&search_type=&aq=2&oq=motorcycle+sus)
sky1118 09-27-2008, 01:26 PM ok i watched some of the vids an im still a little confuzed..??
so how many inches do i drop it for me?? i weigh 180??
Aaron:scooter
fjorn 09-27-2008, 03:37 PM Do you have the owner's manual still? It'll show the sag that you set the suspension to.
sky1118 09-27-2008, 07:57 PM no the kid i got it from didnt have an owneres manual. Ill have to get one. Bike is being put away for the winter anyways. So i have a lot of time to mess with it.
Anyone know where i can get a manual for this baby.??
fjorn 09-28-2008, 03:23 AM Clymer is an aftermarket service manual. Kind of like Mitchell, Hayes, etc. CLICKY (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=clymer+yzf-r1&x=0&y=0) I prefer to have the original service manual from Yamaha. But, they are spendy.
You're putting it away so early? Heck, we probably won't get snow until mid November at the earliest.
