I hadnt started my bike for about a month. When I did, it didnt want to idle. With choke on and throttle held half open, it would idle at 1500, but would die if i closed the throttle, and would sputter and die if i opened it further.
Start with the easy fixes right- draned and filled the tank, no change.
Ok... I took off the carbs and cleaned them up. there was some varnish, some grey powdery residue, and emulsion tubes looked ok.. Cleaned em out, sprayed em out with air, and reassembled. Sprayed out my 8yr old k&n, put everything back together and started...
it starts right up, choke or not, and idles at 4000 rpm. Usual is 3000 with choke. if I open the throttle, it will motor faster, but sputters and strains, and is much louder than usual.. seems like erratic misfire of all cylinders..

did i tear something putting it back together? something on backwards? only thing i can think of is i had some trouble getting the floats to seat, and maby the choke cable is cought up on something?? vacuum leak?

open to all suggestions, and i will be taking it back apart and changing atleast spark plugs before I try and start it again... this sux.

Sounds to me like you missed something in the carbs. Did you pull all jets out of the carbs and clean all the passages thoroughly? Its not uncommon to miss something small in the carbs blocking a small air or fuel passage that will jack up everything. I am not personally familiar with the fuel and air circuits on the carbs for your bike so I cant be an exact help. If I find time tonight I ll see if I can find a schematic of them to see what might be up.

i had the same problem i took off my carbs and did a complete cleaning and reassembled it the exact way i took them apart and now it works perfect. I would suggest that you take them apart again carefully and take pictures with a digital cam for ever step. this way you won't miss anything on the reassembly. make sure you didn't squish the tiny "o" rings on the top caps as they seal your vacuum, also check the "o"rings on the float assembly making sure they didn't get kink or squished. hope this helps
