I have a 97 ace having problem with power it doesent seem to have the torgue that it should for a 1000. Need to know what to look for. also my rpm needle goes up to about 7 and then drop to 0 on its own while riding and while the bike is started but the bike does not have a problem idling. the bike idles fine but the needle moves on its own any suggestions?

some yamaha models use the tach as a service diagnostic readout. so in some cases where the tach stops is significant to what the problem is.

I looked it up in the service manual and 7000rpm is exup related.
3000rpm is tps related.

the exup is an valve that opens and closes at different rpm its inline on the exhaust and if it was not functioning it could cause the bike to run poor.
so if it is a exup related problem the service manual says either
disconnected or short circuited
or servo motor is locked

Anyone know what the best slip on exhaust would give me a loud deep sound on 97 yzf 1000?

FYI the exup is on the header portion of the exhaust and a slippon may not help with your problem

Back then the one to have was Vance and Hines :) or Micron... they both sounded very nice. :)

I trashed a 97 thunderace back in '01...to bad nice bike. Come to think of I trashed myself pretty bad as well. I still have the manual around here. If you have not figured out your problem I could look for it. I also have a set of spare red/white lowers (obviously were not on the bike when I went out in the buckwheat)

Loud & proud, a D&D. A nice bark and sounds good at full song.
Idle and low R's with a deep and nice voice, Wileyco, but seems to fall flat at higher revs.(sound)
Neighbor safe is the Vance & Hines, It is very sweet in looking in Carbon though:thumbup

the exup is adjustable for that year. take off the cover and look at it.....if you can get a look at the service manual. sorry, i don't have one, i worked at a dealer and they adjusted it for me and showed me how to do it for future reference.

when's the last time you had your carbs synced? mine was running rough, then carb syncing fixed that problem. i had a slip on v&h SS2R.

I had a 97 thunder ace. I had the Vance& Hines Slip on and it was just about like stock in fact I crashed and punched a hole in it and noticed on the ride home that it seemed to make more power :) I replaced it with a satin Black D&D that was straight through with no baffles Much better Also Your speedo is hooked to the front wheel via cable so you can change your sprockets without affecting the speedometer I dropped one tooth on the front and it was nice.
And your power problem is your exup Most likley you need to lube the cables and make sure it's adjusted correctly. How's this for a vintage pic? :)
