Firehawk 10-28-2007, 10:30 AM First CRASH.....Big Willow, lowside in T3, September 2005. Only did about $300 worth of damage. Very lucky.

Firehawk 10-28-2007, 10:36 AM And then......that fateful day in September at Buttonwillow.
Here's the last pic I have of her in one piece.
http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/2029/ml1687lb7.jpg
And then, high-side in T15, coming on the front straight running CCW. Second session of the morning, and a guy had already crashed in the same corner in session one. Never even got to the stripe....she just came around. I broke the windscreen on my way over, tumbled once, and ended up sliding on my back, watching her go end over end twice before coming to rest.

Firehawk 10-28-2007, 10:49 AM BUT.....
She will rise again. Watch this space. She's supposed to be in the Long Beach Cycle Show on December 7th, and she WILL be ready.
Going with a 2001 frame this time, so the tank and tail will be slightly updated. Getting the frame right from Yamaha ($1370...yikes), and it will be going to the powdercoater as soon as I get it.
She won't be the same bike second time around....she's going to be BETTER. I should be putting up the build thread in about two weeks. Just don't want to do it until I have all the parts ready to go together.
:hello
Looking forward to the re-birth of the R1 beast
Thanks Biga :thumbup

StoneStone 10-30-2007, 05:10 AM AHHH firehawk I didn't know you crashed!! oh man I'm sorry...sweeeeet bike as always though. Cant wait to see her back in shape.
Firehawk 10-30-2007, 04:46 PM Well, finally got the major component in this rebuild today, so I figured I'd post up a few teaser pics of a few of the new parts. Gotta get the frame prepped tonight, and hopefully get it to the p'coater tomorrow or Thursday. Got lots of work to do, but I think I'm gonna make it on time!
Firehawk 10-30-2007, 04:47 PM Few more...
Finally got my sprockets from VAZ Brazil. I got two 45T and one 44T, so I'm taking the 44T to get hard anodized a darker color to see how it looks. It's close to the design I've been chasing, but not exact.
LOVE the QD's, Corey (Speiglers from Motomummy). They made them exactly how I wanted them.
Getting the triple clamp anodized the color of the billet Brembo MC....should look sweet.
Firehawk 10-30-2007, 04:48 PM And for those that wonder what happens to magnesium when it takes a DIRECT hit....
rorlow 10-30-2007, 04:53 PM ooh . . . its gunna look sweet :jiggy

if we combo'd our three bikes, imagine what we could come up with....
ron....i STILL want to find a carbon sprocket cover. i found this yesterday http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=011&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=320175180741&rd=1 but I'm not sure if it will fit a 98 motor.
Besides, he's advertising it as a "clutch cover". Not sure he knows what he's selling. :dunno
Firehawk 10-30-2007, 05:20 PM btw, i crashed on bridgestone treaded tyres too.:mad.... hey mark, who made your radiator?
Company called Docking Engineering, out of England. It's nice, but I think Pace Rads are nicer.

hmmm, something i'm gonna look into next. yours looks much better than the febur ones i looked at. hey while your bike is apart, can you post up some radiator pics? and point out what you 'don't' like about it compared to the pace version. and are you gonna change tyre brands? i know i did.:lol

Nope. Only ONE crash on Bridgestones in 15 years worth of riding is good enough for me. Besides, I'm blaming it on the track....;)
I think Bridgestone is going to make a dramatic improvement in their street tires very soon...that technology has to trickle down at some point.
Will do on the radiator pics. The biggest problem is that this rad is FAT....it's only a few mm away from the headers on one side, and the front tire STILL rubs the face of the rad when at full compression (track). Nothing I can do. It's well constructed, but was a PITA to mount. Custom everything. Anyway, I'll get those pics up. :thumbup

thanks bro!;) so was it just the fitment issues you didn't like? or is there something else?
Firehawk 10-30-2007, 05:57 PM thanks bro!;) so was it just the fitment issues you didn't like? or is there something else?
nope.....just fitment. would be nice if it was a bit thinner, and went a little lower at the bottom. Pace Radiators make a very nice product.

I'll email Matt at Dynomite to see if he still has a working mold for the 98-01 front sprocket cover. I know they no longer make the 02/03 versions, and the 04/06 mold never made it into production. I just happened to luck out and get one of a handful made for the 02/03 before they stopped making them. I can't tell you how many offers I've had for it, Its almost a collectable piece as far as Dynomites goes :mrgreen
the thought of all the bits from yours, Blur1 and my bike is almost mind boggling :rofl

you know what I just thought of . . . your bike & Marks are at the point of surpassing alltime 98 R1 legend MartinC's for mods :oh

KWComp 10-31-2007, 04:49 AM Ron, Who is the company that makes the rads that Yamaha sells under the GYTR name? I knew at one point but cant remember.
blur1 10-31-2007, 05:06 AM just got an email back from harris.... they said my swingarm is finished, it just has to have the mounting holes machined and the brush finish finalised and it should be shipping early next week with a tracking number!:jiggy i also asked them about a radiator:muahaha

marcaztls 10-31-2007, 05:37 AM God I love looking at pics of ALL the trick R1's you guys have, particularly Ron's, Blu's, Martin's and Firehawk's as you've said. There's something about the early ones when they're done to the standard you guys have... Which smilie to choose, hmmm... :drool
Glad to see yours will be 'back on track' so to speak Firehawk, looking forward to the buildup thread.

skipper06 10-31-2007, 10:56 AM the radiator are an arm and a leg.
second did anything happen to your front end, because i saw pics of your mc, calipers, so i was just wondering.
the bike was looking very sick. hope you fix her but better this time.
Firehawk 10-31-2007, 11:01 AM nah, not mine anyway. and plus martin did his before either of us so thats worth a lot in my book.
He was definitely an inspiration for a lot of what I did. Although, I think he has a LOT more engine mods done. I'll feel a whole lot better when I get this ported/polished/cam'd head and carbs. Still looking for a CF airbox to finish it off, and I'll get it dynoed to make sure everything is up and up.
Martin's bike is still the shizz. Wish he was still around.

I picked up mine off eBay for $600 from a bike breaker in England. An absolute steal.
Yea, the front forks took a bit of rash on the caps. I sent them off to Stig at PPS, and he found one of the fork legs was out-of-true as well. Turned out to be quite an expensive day. Had to pull the front end apart.
I'm supposed to be out in the garage, prepping the frame for the powdercoater, but I can't seem to get my ass off the forum...:lmao

yeah martin and greg from ema were inspirations here .
gsxcorey 10-31-2007, 03:22 PM martin was a model I used to build my 99 r1, but I got the addiction from back when I was into cars...his bike was nuts though. No doubt about it.
rorlow 10-31-2007, 04:05 PM Ron, Who is the company that makes the rads that Yamaha sells under the GYTR name? I knew at one point but cant remember.
Its a company in England that also makes the MotoGP radiators & Superbike radiators, something Engineering, their located close to the Roberts Group Racing facility in Bainbury (or something like that) I believe.
I'll do some more research & see if I can find it :old
Martin's bike is still the shizz. Wish he was still around.

rorlow 11-01-2007, 03:37 PM What happened to Martin anyway? Anyone know?
gone to the dark side just like DSB Mike . . . 1098, think he frequents the 1098 forum now :yes
KWComp 11-02-2007, 03:20 AM Ahh, IC. Did he sell off the R1 when he went to the dark side?

Captain Squid 11-02-2007, 08:16 AM Very nice looking bike! Hopefully the re-build won't be too painful. As long as you are o.k and able to re-biuld it. Can't wait to see pics!
quick6r 11-02-2007, 01:08 PM I have been drooling over that bike for a long time now and I'm looking forward to seeing what the new version will bring!!!
KWComp 11-02-2007, 01:13 PM Mark, what is the show you are trying to have it ready for and whats your bikes role going to be in it?
gsxcorey 11-02-2007, 01:58 PM He's trying to have it done for the 08 motogp opener. He wants rossi to have a better bike so he can give stoner a run for his money.

Firehawk 11-02-2007, 02:53 PM Mark, what is the show you are trying to have it ready for and whats your bikes role going to be in it?
Cycle World show in Long Beach, as part of the Metric Revolution bike competition.
Of course, I don't stand a chance because most everything on my bike is bolt-on and I don't have an ounce of chrome on her, but who gives. Just a chance to get free tix for the weekend and talk bikes with the Cycle World guys. :)
quick6r 11-02-2007, 03:50 PM Isn't that sad that tons of chrome usually wins over a truely sexy bike?
Just ask them which is tougher.......... handing over a couple hundred for "dipped" stock wheels, or handing over a couple thousand for some trick ones.
:muahaha
gsxcorey 11-02-2007, 03:58 PM most of the show bikes that win can't even be ridden. Completely useless actually. But I guess that's what wins. saw a tricked out yami at the cycle world show in minneapolis last year in the yami section...doesn't look like it would work too well w/ rotors/fork's chromed up. It's not my thing, but that stuff is what wins I guess :(
blur1 11-02-2007, 04:42 PM it makes me sick the bikes that win bike shows.... bling does not make a great bike.:kicknuts

Dont even get me started.....Just lost in a show to a chromed out Hayabusa with Coors light paint Job. It was great looking paint for sure. But with the exception of the stretched swing arm and the wheels it was a stock bike, Chromed but, eh-you know what I mean. :mad and yeah, I am a poor loser once in a while. :nowhine

funny.....just wait till I get the picture display done for the R1....
here's the bike at the track 60 days ago....
here's what happened to the bike at the track 60 days ago....
here's what a VISA card can do to make things all better in 60 days. :lmao
the bike gets ridden. i'm even taking it to the show with the high-sided front tire on, sideways scuffs and all. the rear tire was fubar'd.....two sessions on the track and a sharp piece of rear wheel magnesium sliced the bead like butter.
working on installing the new tank vent valve as we speak. pics soon. ;)

well , funny you should mention before and after rebuilds......i snapped my frame in half before this re-incarnation of my bike.and the problem with the show pony bikes i see, is they never change from year to year! whereas our ridden bikes are never the same year to year.

that's a fact.....she's going to look similar in color scheme only. i really think you'll like that MIVV exhaust....looks even better in person. not real shiny carbon....it's much more subdued. using my akra midpipe, it should put the canister back about 3" extra....but i can't mount it till i get the frame back next week.
snapped it in half???? damn bro....don't think i ever saw pics of her after the wreck. got a linky?

i never posted pics of it as i was i hospital unconcious for a while and in rehab after that. i had mates work on the bike for a while. one of them did take phone pics at the crash site. to tell you the truth i dont ever look at them. lemme see if i can find them.... back soon.

How did the wheels hold up? Forks? Any damage there?
Well....if there's a Harris swinger going on there, I'd say things are well on their way back to being normal. ;)

lol, these pics are 2 years old. the bike is all new.... in fact i bought a whole different standard bike as a starting point.the old bike apparently highsided landed upside down on the rear rh side, crushed the key flat in the ignition from the impact and flung me into the side of the mountain, knocking me unconcious, and apparently leaving an imprint of my body in the side of it.i was lucky to even survive.

Firehawk 11-06-2007, 06:07 PM Took the bodywork off to the painter today. Last time, I got a smokin deal because pops sent me to his painter, and didn't charge me anything. This time, he's too busy to get it done in the next few months. Through several phone calls, I found a really good shop in Santee that will do an awesome job (they do all the paintwork for GP Cycles, a local high-end Ducati shop)....but the estimate was enough to choke a horse. I know this paint job is going to be even more professional than the last, but DAMN. He's got everything except my front fender....still waiting for that. I have a promise of next week on the fender...so we'll see.
I was racking my brain trying to figure out how to make the headlight holes perfect in the track fairing, and I finally figured it out. The old fairing was toast anyway.....but it sure was hard to take a dremel to it. In the end, the holes turned out well, and I think I'm going to frame the part I cut out. http://www.sportbikeforum.net/images/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif
Should get the frame back tomorrow or Thursday, so the build-up begins. http://www.sportbikeforum.net/images/smilies/hooray.gif

Stupid question probably, but I ve been doing some custom stuff for a while (did a lot of car fabrication before getting into bikes) and it always amazed me how many people dont test fit before moving on to the next step.

Yep....first thing I did was fit test the headlights. They fit even better than they did in the old fairing. :)
How did I cut it nice? Used a dremel with a cutoff wheel to get close, then used a 150 grit flexible sanding pad and a lot of patience. Was really difficult not to use the dremel sanding wheel and just hack away at it....one mistake and I knew I was screwed. Had a few beers to calm the nerves too. ;)
Tallied up the rebuild, including paint, engine parts, and powdercoating....just cracked 5 digits. Of course, I've got about $2000 worth of parts to sell (marchesini front wheel, rotors, brembo MC, etc etc), but just seeing those numbers put things in perspective a bit.
This was an expensive crash, and I need NOT to do that again.

Firehawk 11-09-2007, 09:46 PM what mods does it need? and how is the gloss finish on it?
Going to "bore" it out a bit so you can see the sprocket. I did it to the OEM one. I'll take pics when I finish, probably tonight. It's a bit heavy, but the gloss is very nice. I was actually surprised.
Firehawk 11-09-2007, 09:49 PM Few pics from today....
Here's a before and after of the rear wheel with the sprocket I had anodized. The new color is trick looking compared to the grey....I really like it.
Firehawk 11-09-2007, 09:50 PM Hard to tell with the light, but the triple trees look awesome. I'll take a few more pics in the daylight tomorrow.
Frame is off the engine....and you can really see just how bent that sucker is. Curves like a banana.
Firehawk 11-09-2007, 09:51 PM Went to pick up the frame today, and it's GLOSS black, not flat black. They'll be stripping it and recoating next week. Bummer, because I was looking forward to starting the build this weekend.
Sprocket and triple clamps look TRICK. The color they came up with looks awesome.
Also, the race head shipped today. I pulled the frame off the motor today, and I'm going to take the whole block over to Lee's to have them install the head properly. Hopefully the head gets here Tuesday, and it takes them a week to get it mounted up. The carbs and ram airbox should also ship next week.
Bodywork is at the painters, with the exception of the front fender, which should be here end of next week. Just need to run it over to the painter.
Soooo......I'm planning that by November 24th (two weeks), I will have everything from everybody (engine built and installed, bodywork painted, frame complete and built up), and have two solid weeks to build. The bike is going to need some serious dyno time with the head/carb/ramair, but I'll do that after the show. At least everything will be assembled and complete, and ready for the dyno.
It's a thin wire, but I think I'm going to make it.
KWComp 11-10-2007, 03:34 AM Where did you get the head from Mark and who did the work on it?

How did the stock one turn out? Pic?
Firehawk 11-10-2007, 01:34 PM Where did you get the head from Mark and who did the work on it?
A guy back east in Georgia. He had the work done by www.georgedeanracing.com (http://www.georgedeanracing.com). Mayo told me he's heard good things about the place. Guy told me with this head and aftermarket carbs, he gained 15+ HP on the dyno. Of course, he was using 39mm flatsides and a stock airbox....I'm getting 41mm flatsides and ramair. Should see a bit more HP....hopefully. :mrgreen

Firehawk 11-12-2007, 01:09 PM Awesome to say the least Bro. How about some close ups of your quick disconnect set up on the front calipers...Are those the ones Corey set you up with?
Yep, they are. I still need to work out how I'm going to attach the brakelines to the triple clamps (no holes on the underside of the lower clamp...), and then I can get the rest of the lines installed. That's tonight's project. Also need to get the lower race off the stem on the Graves clamps. Going in the freezer now. :mrgreen
I'll get you pics in a bit. I just want to have the entire front end assembled and ready to install. Assembly will go fast that way. :)
KWComp 11-12-2007, 01:54 PM OK, I know I am full of questions today, but a couple more on your front axle, what brand Ti axle is that (I am digging the gold color) and is that set up for something other than factory bearings? I ask because I notice your Ohlins dont have the usual spacer in them for the Axle, like you are running an over sized axle (Superbike set up maybe?)
And last one then Ill leave you alone today...Did you make or buy the clamp on the end of your clip on that is holding the Brake Resv Bracket?

In order....
1) Here's the quick disconnects....should make things MUCH easier during wheel changes. Just take the calipers completely off instead of hanging them over the front stand.
2) The front axle is coated titanium from Yoyodyne, but they're about 7 years old. Got them from Bryan Niles on the R1F three years ago, and Yoyodyne stopped making them a few years before that. I'd call it fantastic timing....cause I got a front and rear axle, and swingarm pivot bolt out of him. Beautiful stuff. And no, it's not Superbike or anything....it fits the standard setup. I'm using ceramic bearings front and rear, but the standard axle fits. The Ohlins wheel spacers are in there....:mrgreen
3) Reservoir is held on by a Graves reservoir clamp and a special bracket that was supplied with my billet master cylinder. The guy was WAY cool, and makes the brackets himself. Bolted right up. I do, however, need to find plugs for the ends of the bars....don't like them open like that.
and....picked up the frame today. Should have a rolling chassis put together tonight. :yes

Yep, with slight variations. The 00-01 R1 bodywork is slightly different. The tank and tail will be a different shape, and the front fender will be carbon fiber. Still running the OEM R7 decal kit, though. :)

Dude, if his learning curve is anything like mine... you don't wanna go there.
I thrashed up a LOT of equipment that the old man payed for to learn what I know now. I don't even wanna think about what it all cost.
Firehawk 11-15-2007, 07:56 AM Made a bit of progress last night.
Sucks, but I discovered that Attack sent me the WRONG steering stem. Says they can't get me one till next Friday. I'll still get the front end on there in time, but I HATE getting behind.
Gotta love the rear fender!!!! That's going away tonight....when I fit the undertail. Gotta order a few 6mm anchors from Racebolts today.
Also got my Magical MotoGP style front fender....taking it to the painter today. So, hoping to have the bodywork back by Thanksgiving.
And, Lee's Cycle told me to drop the motor off on the 23rd, and he's have the head installed by the 26th, $450. Said he's check out everything and make sure all is tip-top. I think that's the best way to go. I also told him that I had a set of 41mm carbs and an airbox on the way, and he said "it's an Attack airbox right?". He told me that's the right route to go...and that they can tune them very well. Felt good to hear....hopefully they have they golden ticket on making that combo sing!
Paid the guy for the carbs and airbox....said he'd throw in a timing advancer and a bunch of other stuff he didn't need anymore. Think I got a REALLY good deal out of this....;)

Yep. Take a look at most Superbikes, and that's all they're running. Just eliminates the need for a reservoir. That tube holds just as much fluid as the old tube and reservoir put together.
You got it....Woodcraft clamps and Graves bars. :thumbup
Thanks for reminding me.....off to Home Depot to look for bar END CAPS. :)

Shoot me the link for the tubing, I need some for my rear too, dig the tinted more than my clear. Fred at Yoyo turned me onto that setup, I ran it about a year untill I picked up the billet reservoirs. Pick below was when I was testing the tubing to see if it would sweat.
Its looking awesome as usual . . . the flatsides, airbox & headwork ought to put you up there rwhp with ChuckH's 98 with ram air :bow

thanks Mark, here's a couple pic's to help keep you motovated, think he was getting 182-185 rwhp but his Over Racing ram air setup was abit more extreme than the Attack :lol

Firehawk 11-16-2007, 03:37 AM rather than a large cut-out, a drilled out pattern similier to whats seen on race uppers might look sweet too :old
By the way....gave that a shot yesterday. Didn't turn out so well. Carbon doesn't like to be drilled so much. After the first few holes began chipping and peeling (tried high and low speed drilling), I just bored it out like the old one. Made the cut a bit narrower, but it turned out well. I'll get pics up in a bit.....think I need to shove off for bed now. :lmao
Just a friendly update.....dropped the front fender off at the painter today, and he told me the painting would be done before Thanksgiving. :yes
Got the head today, but haven't cracked the box open yet.
Attack told me I should have the steering stem by next Friday.....and if not, the guy at Attack that I've been talking to said he'd drop it off personally on Sunday. That's customer service.
rorlow 11-16-2007, 03:39 AM I'm hoping for about 157 or so....about what Blur1 is pulling. Still, that's about 25+ HP over what I was making two months ago. ;)
there was actually abit more motor work done on his 98, and I believe alot of BSB parts went into it. From what I recall I think his 02 was up around 170 rwhp :yes
Firehawk 11-16-2007, 03:43 AM That's SOOO much more motor than I could ever use. Not being a puss, just a realist. :rofl

Chuck is a very accomplished track day rider and even he said the 98 of his is pretty scary even for him, the motor is an absolute torgue monster, in fact he pulled the BST's off it because he couldn't keep the front end down :yes
blur1 11-16-2007, 09:05 AM coming along quite nicely:fact...... and ron, that honda tubing looks EXACTLY the same as the ten kate honda tubing i'm using! mine came as a package the same as that. i just used the tubing out of it though. so my guess is it will sweat too. but it doesn't discolor atleast!
Firehawk 11-16-2007, 11:40 AM i just used the tubing out of it though. so my guess is it will sweat too. but it doesn't discolor atleast!
Eh crap....I didn't want to hear that. The blue tubing DID sweat?
I've got 3 feet of Yoyodyne clear tubing I KNOW won't sweat....guess I'll have it on standby.

sonamabitch . . . I may just go back to fuggin black :whiteflag
Yoyo's clear is the only one I've had success with but it chalks and the fluid turns brown quick :mad
blur1 11-16-2007, 03:57 PM mark, i'm kinda confused about the 'blue' tube you mentioned? the pic you posted on your bike 'looks' green to me? is that what you meant? because that is what i have. and ron , mine has stopped sweating for some reason and the fluid has never discolored..... mind you, i use castrol S.R.F.full synthetic fluid. so i'd give it a try at least.... i mean it's pretty easy swapping lines if you have too anyway. heres a refresher pic of mine.
Firehawk 11-19-2007, 07:36 PM mark, i'm kinda confused about the 'blue' tube you mentioned? the pic you posted on your bike 'looks' green to me?
Well...maybe it's more green than blue. Just colorblind, I guess. :mrgreen
So, I got SCREWED on the race head. I knew it the first time I looked at it. I'm not stupid, and I guess he thought I was. The intake and exhaust ports have never been touched, and the valve seats are covered in carbon. The thing really looks like shit. I can't tell just looking at the cams if they're aftermarket or not, but I'm guessing NO from the condition of the rest of the head. I'm really disappointed right now, because I wanted to drop this head on with the carbs and airbox, and make some good HP. I paid this guy 600 bones for the head....and did so thru Paypal. Not sure if I have any recourse, but after I have Lee's verify tomorrow that the cams are OEM, I'm going to go after this guy.
I DID get the 41mm carbs and airbox....that stuff was in great shape! Might be hitting you up for a little setup help, Blur. Not sure if it's a good idea to put the carbs and airbox on top of a stock motor. Bad idea?
If Lee's says the head is crap tomorrow, I'm going to drop the engine in tomorrow night.
The correct steering stem shipped from Attack today, and the bodywork should be done tomorrow or Wednesday. Should have the bike mostly together by Sunday, if everything falls into place. :mrgreen
1: valves on the crap head
2 & 3: exhaust ports on the crap head
4: intake port on the crap head
5: intake port on my OEM head
Firehawk 11-19-2007, 07:39 PM Few more....
Here's how the sprocket cover turned out, Ron....not too bad. Much better than how it looked with all the holes.
Carbs are in great shape. *whew*
Not sure if you can tell from a pic if these cams are aftermarket, but here you go. Lee's will be able to tell me for final tomorrow.

blur1 11-20-2007, 01:27 AM also mark, about the cams, are the sprockets slotted where the cam bolts are? if not i'd be suss about them too.

There's another one on there....buy it now, for a hell of a lot less. Lemme go look.
Here you go, Ron....this the guy I bought mine from.

KWComp 11-20-2007, 09:21 AM Damn Mark, that sucks about the head, hopefully you at least got some cams out of the deal. Let us know what you find out.
Firehawk 11-20-2007, 09:28 AM also mark, about the cams, are the sprockets slotted where the cam bolts are? if not i'd be suss about them too.
I'd say that's a big NO.
FAAAAAAACK!
Firehawk 11-20-2007, 09:30 AM Damn Mark, that sucks about the head, hopefully you at least got some cams out of the deal. Let us know what you find out.
I just sent the guy an e-mail with pics and asked for a refund. Let's see if he mans up to this.
Mayo5 lives near him....might just have to call in a favor.
Dammit.
KWComp 11-20-2007, 09:38 AM Minor Set back Bro....As for your carbs and Airbox.....I would say still use em. How much bigger are the Flatslides than stock? Unless you went to the large end of the scale I would say you should still be able to tune them in to your motor.
Firehawk 11-20-2007, 10:09 AM Minor Set back Bro....As for your carbs and Airbox.....I would say still use em. How much bigger are the Flatslides than stock? Unless you went to the large end of the scale I would say you should still be able to tune them in to your motor.
41mm is pretty big....
I'm still planning on doing headwork, so I don't want to do a bunch of dyno time trying to get the carbs tuned in if I'm just going to do it again later. Might just shelf the carbs until I get the head built up. At least I have a spare head to build up....:hung
So....I guess that's the new question. Do I just put my OEM carbs back on to avoid dyno time, or will the 41mm carbs really make that much difference on a stock motor? The Keihin's will have to be jetted and sync'd, and the OEM carbs are ready to go. Also got the ram air to consider, but according to Blur1, he made MORE hp running the STOCK airbox.
Hard decision.
KWComp 11-20-2007, 12:43 PM Try the carbs, if its to much to get it running good right now, swap the OEM's back in for the show. Then you can experiment with the flat slides when you have time. I would at least give em a go though, its not like it will take you long to swap the carbs in and out.

Awesome! Sorry I gave you the wrong link the first time.
The NEW Attack stem just showed up. And since I'm not having a head installed, the motor is going in too. See you guys in a few hours. :)

hmmm, does the pink hose look like this hose?
Firehawk 11-20-2007, 06:32 PM Front end is on. Aside from small clearance problems with the steering damper and the MC to T portion of the brakeline, everything fit perfectly. Also made new brackets for the headlight (shoulda done three years ago) and mounted the dash better than I did the first time. I'm MUCH happier with things this time.
Motor goes in tonight.
blur1 11-20-2007, 07:45 PM did you buy new blue nuts for the top of the forks? if so where and how much? 'cause 2 of mine are still scratched from my accident.:( ..... and did you leave anything on your bike that is scratched/damaged?
R4Ltony 11-20-2007, 07:48 PM I think without some tuning for your motor the 41mm slide carbs will not run right Mark. I'd put the stock ones on till you complete the head work. Otherwise will it run? yes, but maybe not very well, and that would be a hassle I'm sure.

only for one side. the right side fork tube was ground up, and the cap had to be replaced. nuts came with it. nuts on the other side were fine. Stig at PPS is an Ohlins guru....i could call him and see what it would take to order the nuts....just lemme know.
the only piece of the bike left that has scratches is the clutch lever. gonna sand and touch that up tomorrow. other than that, i replaced everything. :mrgreen
thanks for the vaccuum tube pics.....been talking to bryan niles via PM about carb setup. think i have a good baseline to start from.

hmmm, the pink hose will be interesting as i was under the understanding it was a fuel tolerent hose. it might be different than mine though as mine is only sold on a roll hose from a local auto parts store.

Every time I'm at my buddies shop he always kids me about all the Ti fasteners on mine, he's an ex AMA racer/team owner so its cool. I've been trying for over 2.5 years to get a Ti kickstand made with no luck, but now my bud above just got a bunch of machines and a new tig welder for his shop, and is going to fab one for me after Thanksgiving :jiggy

that tank is beautiful, but i'm more interested in the radiator shroud. been trying to find one of those for a year now. everyone that i e-mailed said they didn't have the time to make me one or didn't have one to give me. tried graves and got shot down.

rorlow 11-23-2007, 03:03 AM Ron are you talking about Scott??
Scott's the man, if your still interested in one for yours, let me know. Do you still have your old 02 one laying around? if not I'll just pull mine so Scott can get accurate measurements. If you want to pull yours I can drop it off with mine at his shop. Let me know Kevin :yes
KWComp 11-23-2007, 03:05 AM No, I sold my 02 over the summer so the stand went with it. I might be interested in an 06 version if he does em up though. Let me know when you get some more details on it.

And, thanks for the link to that site. I can't read japanese, so I don't know if they were selling the shroud in that pic or not. It's kinda just a pic of the front end of the bike, with a bunch of japanese writing under it. Maybe Simon could decode it for me. :)

Returning the money was probably more about saving his reputation rating..But I guess it worked good for Mark, and that's what counts..
blur1 11-23-2007, 04:43 PM lol, the shipping would be worth more than the pos head is worth! mark, i hope YOU aren't paying return shipping? send the bloody thing c.o.d. if i was the douche, i would have just said keep the crappy rusted head as a paperweight.

I'm not. It went out yesterday. Saga over. Hope he doesn't try to resell that thing again. Maybe he really did think I was just some dumb shmuck that didn't know what he was looking at. Either way, he's got his doorstop back, and I've got my money. :mrgreen
Junior 11-25-2007, 09:56 AM you could do a basic polish and gasket match yourself real quick and get 80% of the gains man.
Firehawk 11-25-2007, 10:05 AM Here's a few pics to keep the thread updated.
Motor went in, barring a few issues. The engine bolt holes in the block that get used for frame sliders are getting pretty worn out. The right side bolt would barely thread in there. I pulled it out and looked.....the threads are totally booger'd. Took a dremel and a wire wheel to clean them up, but eventually the bolt threaded in. Had to replace the slider bolts with titanium too....(pics are for you, Ron :)).
As I was putting on the head pipe, I remembered in my little grab bag of ti that had a dozen 8mm nuts from my old Dymag wheels. They made great headpipe clamp nuts :) Ti EVERYWHERE!!!! :mrgreen
Fitted the airbox....and she fits well. With the radiator on, there's plenty of room for the box airscoop. Just need to fabricate a small screen for the inlet and brackets to hold it in place. Carbs are going on today. Got a good base setting on the jets, so hopefully I won't have to mess with them too much. Bryan Niles has been helping me with vaccuum tube routing.....but I might need a spot more help Blur....not absolutely sure where to route everything. His description was a bit confusing.
Lots of detail work left to do. Got the remote adjuster for the master cylinder lever installed. Need to figure out how to keep the end of the damper from hitting the dash at full lock to the left. All kinds of little stuff to keep me busy.
Also thinking about having Corey contact Speigler and make me one more line for the rear. Front lines are black, so I'd like the rear line to match. Two weeks to go....can we make it happen Corey?????
:yes

blur1 11-25-2007, 08:08 PM I'm not. It went out yesterday. Saga over. Hope he doesn't try to resell that thing again. Maybe he really did think I was just some dumb shmuck that didn't know what he was looking at. Either way, he's got his doorstop back, and I've got my money. :mrgreen
hopefully not this guy?

It's not. My guy was in Georgia.
Sounds interesting enough, but I think he's selling the whole engine. Besides....I should have learned my lesson after this last catastrophe. I need to build up my own head and not go second hand. :mrgreen

exactly, i agree you SHOULD do your own head as you know its history, and you know it mates to the block etc and all the cam caps etc etc match up. i wouldn't even think about buying another head to do. spend the money you will save and put it towards YOUR engine.:fact

Hmmm....let's see what I can find.
How about.....the ram air scoop installed http://www.sportbikeforum.net/images/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif
Had to make special brackets to make it fit since I'm not running the stock radiator. Everything lined up very nicely. Carbs are on, ram air box is on, but I need to run a few hoses.
Installed my carbon fiber shift shaft. I've got two of them, Ron http://www.sportbikeforum.net/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif
I also found a position for the throttle where the throttle cables don't bind, but I'm screwed if that lever ever needs to fold.
Still need to route vent tubes and finish a slew of other details.

After the show. It has to be drained of all gas and fumes, so I might as well just leave her dry. It's only another week. Got more work to do before I declare her operational anyway.
