Hi

I own Yamaha Virago 535 1987 and I'm just curious if the premium gas would hurt my bike. In the manual it says to use unleaded but one of my mechanics said its ok to use premium..
Also there are many articles stating that premium is just waste of money..?

Does anybody has any opinion on this??? Thank you upfront.

Regards

IMO run the cheapest gas that doesnt cause detonation/pre-ignition. Any more than that is a waste of money.

:hello :welcome to YFN

As already stated, run the lowest possible that does not cause pinging, knocking.

hey guys i actually have a ? about that now, when i was trying different gasses i went from the highest grade to the lowest but i didnt really notice much of a difference in performance or sound what EXACTLY does pinging or pre-ignition sound like just for reference. :thanks

Ping is what's called, but pre-detonation is the correct term. Most older people know this from the older cars that ran higher compression and needed the higher octane in order to "not pre-detonate".

Most vehicle's these days have computers to control this via timing adjustments now. Although some higher compression engines will still need higher octane fuel in order to not ping.

If the bike is stock then run 87 and you will be fine. Anything more is a waste of money.

As for what it sounds like, when heavy under load you will hear a knocking or pinging sound coming from the engine.

hmmm I might just start putting mid-grade in my R1 from now on

Not sure about running 86 or 87 octane since I don't recall ever seeing it around here. About the lowest I run is 89. I doubt that I would run that lower octane though even it it was around here.

The manual calls for 91 or higher. The point being that you don't have to run 93+octane for the bike to operate properly.

The pinging sounds like there is a Woodpecker in your motor. If you don't know what a Woodpecker sounds like, you will have to do some research. :lol

it wouldnt be a ticking would it?? mine has always had 92 or whatever is the highest we had in washington in it... and i tried the others and didnt hear a distinct difference, but other than trying the other grades i have never used less than 90 for more than 1 tank.

If it sounds like this (http://www.mrjiggs.com/docs/sounds/60.wav) then you may have a problem

there's a lot of difference to the fuel other than just octane.

93+ is generally oxygenated and will run leaner than lower octanes, you'll need a different ignition map for best power under best case scenario, worst case scenario is burned valves from the heat.

I run 87 in the jeep, but frankly, I'd run kerosene in the jeep and not think twice about it, wartime era designs aren't picky about their fuel, and where generally designed to be flex fuel anyways. If I was driving a more modern engine I wouldn't use 87 just on the basis of the dirtyness of the fuel, the lack of cleaners, the lack of anti-gels etc.

run what the manuafcturer recommends to get the best hp and best burning condition. That's what it was tuned on. Lowest octane you can run w/o it knocking or pinging...no reason to run higher octane unless you want to waste your money.
