Hello, I have a 1998 yz 125 that my dad and I just tore down and rebuilt the top end, along with replacing the kick axle that snapped off, and we have it all up and running again but there is something wrong with the clutch. As far as I know, we never did anything with the clutch and we're both really confused on why it isnt working. We checked the cable and it has no resistance. When we checked inside the engine, the push rod seemed fine, but it was just randomly spinning and didnt seem like it was connected to anything inside. Any information would be great, thanks.

Sounds like a cable came of on one end, or it's just worn out. Pretty old bike for a clutch to hold that long.

We just replaced both the throttle cable and the clutch cable last fall, so they are new. The problem is inside the clutch i believe. I have been told it could possibly be that the push rod (i believe thats what its called) came loose or spun off of the part where the cable enters into the engine, but i'm not sure.

Ahh, okay. Have you pulled the clutch housing to get a look in there?

We looked inside of it but neither one of us knows much of anything about how the clutch functions inside there, so we didnt know if anything was broken or what not.

I stumbled across your question and thought I'd offer some help, having just re-built a YZ 125 clutch (this morning).

You probably know most of this...
The clutch cable is attached to the push lever axle, which goes down through the cover. The end of the axle has vertical splines that engage the grooves on the push rod. When twisted, the axle causes the rod to pull up on the pressure plate.

The axle may not be lined up properly.

Try disconnecting the clutch cable at the lever (or give it plenty of slack at the lever) then remove the little bolt just below the point where the push lever axle goes into the case. That bolt keeps the axle down and engaged.
Once removed, you can pull up slightly to disengage the splines, twist axle to the left (away from direction of pull) then slide down and re-engage splines.

The lever should point away from you - looking at the engine from the side - when you feel resistance.

Then adjust the cable at the lever to take up the slack. Hope you get it figured out.
