Airport security couldn’t believe MacBook Air is a laptop
17.03.2008
The TSA has been known to take issue with products designed in Cupertino before, but for one particular traveler, it was Apple’s thinnest laptop ever that caused the latest holdup. Upon tossing his ultra-sleek slab of aluminum underneath the scanner, security managed to find enough peculiarities to remove it from the flow, pull it aside and wrangle up the owner for some questions. Apparently, the TSA employee manning the line was flabbergasted by the “lack of a drive” and the complete absence of “ports on the back,” and while hordes of co-workers swarmed to investigate, the user’s flight took off on schedule.
Thankfully, said owner was finally allowed to pass through after some more in-the-know colleagues explained in painfully simple terms what an SSD was, but the poor jet-setter most definitely paid the price for trying to slip some of the latest and greatest under the sharp eyes of the TSA (and cutting it close on time, of course).

Personally I'd still get the IBM X300 instead... :mrgreen
HornetR1 03-17-2008, 06:48 AM oh yeah? why is that? not a mac person, i have been thinking of getting a new one but mine works okay for what i use it for...

Well, it's the new IBM laptop that people keeps on comparing to the Macbook Air. But really, it shouldn't be in comparison, cause one is more for leisure, and the other is more of a business laptop.

HornetR1 03-17-2008, 06:54 AM oh wow.... they are still both pretty spendy... :yes
mine now was only i think like 1500 at the time, basic hp.... overheating alot bad though...
hmmm this ibm is pretty nice though eh? hmmmmm
and i can see that the business aspect of IBM... vs the play/fun aspect of the macbook.. i think i would probably have to go with the macbook though... but the lack of an internal dvd or cd rom would piss me off..

Also lack of a LAN port... :computer
HornetR1 03-17-2008, 07:03 AM :eek wtf REALLY!!! how do you hook up to the net? wifi? or internal reciever cant remember what you call them...

Only WiFi for MacBook Air, for LAN you will most likely need an USB adapter... :computer
Regular LAN port is too thick for the MacBook Air, but they should have designed something similar to the 3com XJACK connector...

Any decent ones? Depends what you need it for. The IBM X61 is a pretty good buy lately, the price is dropped. But mind you, the X300(13.3") and X61(12.1") are ultraportable laptops for people on the move all the time, it's nothing like a 1721 with a 17" LCD. If you don't move around that often with your laptop and wanted to use it like a desktop, then the X300, X61, or the Macbook Air are not the ideal choices. The Inspiron 1721 is more of a multimedia/home laptop.
Anyway, for durability, nothing beats IBM and Toshiba(not the Satellite line), they have the most solid keyboards of all, and this is well known in the laptop industry. For ultraportables, check out the Toshiba Portege line, they're very nice too.
:)
Way to educate your employees TSA :bitchslap

If you do get a Toshiba, try not to get something from the Satellite line. They have this new Qosmio line, never seen it in person myself yet, but according to the description, it seems like something that would suit your need very well, not too big not too small, and not too expensive either.

rorlow 03-18-2008, 01:54 AM for what you get for the money I'd buy a MacBook Pro over the Air anyday, and you can save several hundred by buying a refurbed one with a guarantee from Apple direct :thumbup
riley42 03-18-2008, 03:44 AM Ya, you can't compare the Macbook Air to any of the laptops you've mentioned because it's built for those that don't use wires or dvd drives everyday. It's a laptop for on the go use. You can always save movies directly to it from home then have them on the road. Plus the SSD or whatever hard drive is bad ass. If you're gonna compare the Mac with the Dell's and Toshiba's compare the Macbook Pro. The Pro is high end, and still has all the Drives and ports on it. There's always the ibook if you don't need to drop big bucks but still want a cool Mac laptop. I wouldn't mind the black ibook as some what of an add on to my Imac. Kind of a spare HD that I can take with me for trips.
Oh ya TSA are idiots.
HornetR1 03-18-2008, 07:17 AM the qosmio looks realy cool thanks val! im not really big into macs though im really used to windows, and i actually prefer xp over vista too :blush
macs seem that they are based more for liesure use and movies, and music and stuff.. i do like the fact that they arent quite as easily corrupted like the windows system is... well from what i have heard anyways.. thanks for the help guys! :thumbup
