: Clutch Problem
A_Town17 02-23-2008, 08:18 AM The clutch on my 05 R6 slips. I only feel it in the upper rpms. I just had the clutch plates replaced and it is still slipping.
What else could be my problem? The bike feels basically like it is spinning the rear wheel, but that is clearly not the case.
Is it possible that there is a problem with the springs that could have been missed when the plates where replaced and is causing this?
I'm lost. Someone tell me something...
valerossi 02-23-2008, 10:45 AM Can it be your clutch is not fully engaged even when the lever is completely out? Have you checked the freeplay setting and the cable?
syncitizen 02-23-2008, 11:00 AM Good point. Once on my ol FZR I thought the clutch was going out. It turned out the clutch cable was extremely frayed/stretched and causing an issue that sounds similar to A_town17's

also , did u soak the new plates in oil for a few hours before install?

HornetR1 02-23-2008, 04:14 PM becuase there have been "some" people that have had slippage with them, becuase of the nature of the full synthetic oils... they are too ummm cant remember the words they used, but its not allowing enough friction basically... i think thats how it went... :dunno
i use semi-synth and havent had a problem. :)

Seen a few guys that used full-synthetic AUTO oil (Mobil 1), and had problems with the clutch slipping right after an oil change. Went back to standard oil, and the slip went away. Since most bikes have wet clutches, the quality/type of oil you use is incredibly important.
Basically, in the pursuit of making an oil that's "super slippery", synthetic stays in between clutch plates, keeping them from gripping properly. Least that's the way it was explained to me.
We never ran synth oil in the racebikes, and it was widely known NOT to use a synth oil UNLESS it was specifically designed for motorcycles.

Full synthetic doesnt cause slippage. Its the quality of the work of who put the clutch plates/steel plates in. Now did you know how to adjust your clutch if you get slippage? Theres a screw that you need to play with. :owned

Hmmmm....then how does that explain a simple oil change making the slip go away?
A_Town17 02-25-2008, 06:54 PM I am running full synthetic and it is for cars (trucks actually). Two of my boys run it, and have been w/out problems for a while. I don't want this to be another "can i run synthetic oil thread". I will drain the oil and put in some Yamalube if that may solve the problem. Maybe soaking the plates in synthetic didn't work like regular oil would have. If that is the case, will changing to Yamalube allow the new oil enough access to the plates to remedy this problem? Should I ride some miles, or just let it run, or pull the clutch lever a bunch? What would get the new oil to the plates without damage due to the slipping until it stops?
A_Town17 02-25-2008, 07:05 PM PS The guy that replaced the plates said one of the old ones was broken. He also said that he "glass beaded the steel plates", but I have no idea what this means (and no, I didn't pay extra for it, in fact I only paid $50 labor, sort of a friend rate and $120 parts). Also, since a plate was broken, I feel like that was the problem before the replacement. So, now it would either be improper installation, or the synthetic oil causing problems with brand new plates.
