Anyone know how close the 02 and the 03 are mechanically? Would a factory service manual be the same for the two different years???

Me too..... :( thieves took mine from me and when I got her back she had been violated, tainted and never the same.

It was the first and only bike that I took more than a month to decide exactly what I wanted and then bought. Every other bike has been almost an impulse buy.

Sorry to hear that. I wound up selling mine to buy my '05 YZ250F so I could teach my son to ride dirt as I couldn't afford both.

I literally took my time comparing all the liter bikes out at the time and settled on the R1. :)

yep....the 02 and 03 are identical in every way

the only differences are in paint...
the red and white scheme was only available in 02. the silver was available both years but the 02 has an added "R1" clear sticker under the red r1 sticker on the mid fairings. the 02 blue has a large white flag decal and in 03 they minimized the white flag look considerably. in 03 they offered the limited edition black and red flame livery...there you go thats the differences:thumbup

i still miss my blue 99 and silver 02 r1's:(

There were some minor mechanical updates as well. Mostly related to any recalls that came out. But, IIRC, some other changes regarding TPS settings, etc. But, for all intensive purposes, they are very similar. It's like the 98/99 and the 00/01 models before them. The 04's and up... Ya'll are on your own. I didn't care for the designs, and lost interest in them for the most part.

IMO, the 02/03 are the best looking R1's. My favorite being the silver/black, then the red/white. Although, the Euro blue colors were pretty good also. :)

Well actually, you ALL missed the most important difference!!! :lol

The 03 has hazard lights, and the 02 doesn't. Mechanically identical, electrically identical, except the extra hazard button in the switchblock.

Ah and the colours ...

No worries. :)

As far as I understand it, there's only two models shipped: US and Euro. So, I believe they Aussie bikes would fall under the Euro spec.

:fact you got it right...the US gets its own bikes, thats why the glitch in the throttle of the 07 r1 only effected the US versions
