: Do you use Lubrication?

On your chain you sicko's! :rofl

Seriously though, I've noticed that many of your chains (such as Bogie's and R1Lovers) are unbelievably clean.

I can't see how you can do that with Chain Wax, or anything else for that matter, on them.

My bike has just been taken off the road to avoid the silly season (everyone here forgets how to drive over Christmas so its too dangerous to ride around imho) so I'm getting ready for a serious Clean and Mod session.

Just wondering either how you clean them, or how you lube them...

Woops typo in the subject, can anyone change it to Lubrication? Thanks.

Clean and no mess? WD40 is not sticky enough, it will fly off your chain and splash everywhere... err, wait, I forgot, you cannot ride over 20 mph... :fawkdance :lol

P.S. I use a spray-on chain wax. :)

Haha.

Sorry Bogie, sorta set you up for that one... :kicknuts

I was always told that WD-40 damages the O-rings?
Is this not true?

Which chain wax?
The one I use is white and quite think, you can't miss it. And it still flicks all over the place.

I use this one... MAXIMA Chain Wax, you should able to find it at a lot of local stores.

I used to use the white stuff too, then yeah it wasn't sticky enough and it splashed all over the place, especially to the rear wheel and it was a bish to clean.

Here is the deal on my clean chain.... lol

When I put the new wheels on I had the stock chain on there and I cleaned it pretty well with WD-40. I then took those pics. After a few rides I noticed that it needed a little more lubrication, so I then went with the Maxima Chain Wax that I have been using for years. After a few more rides I noticed that it was always flinging off and getting my wheel looking like crap. I then cleaned again with WD and continue to use only WD and just apply/clean it at least every 300-500 miles.

So far this has resulted in the best option for me..... I hate crap flinging off the chain and so far nothing really stays on it. (it might be because it's so damn fast though) :lmao

WD-40 is all that is needed on O & X ring chains unless you're going off road.

I read some reviews that discouraged the use of wd-40 because of how well it penetrated and what it did underneath the o-rings, though I can't imagine it makes much difference in the overall life of the chain.

I just tried this dupont teflon tonight for the first time, that I read about in a review from a magazine I believe. It was highly recommended by them, so I'll see how accurate the review was.

That wasn't what I was asking... I was asking how you guys keep your chains so clean and still avoid excessive wear. :mock

You should never use a wax or thick grease on an O-ring chain.

Why? Two reasons.
1. Its pointless, because the pins that you need to lubricate are sealed with O-rings so the lube isnt getting in.
2. Grease and chain wax attract dirt to the O-rings wich accelerates the deterioration of the seal.

The key to taking care of an O-ring chain start with the install. Wipe the chain down with a rag soaked in Diesel Fuel or WD-40. Preferably the Diesel fuel. Reason for that is that WD-40 is a penetrant and though it is fine on the seals, it will penetrate and break down the factory applied grease on the pins. Why not soak the chain like some suggest? Same reason, you dont want anything getting past the O-rings to break down the grease on the pins.

Once the chain is clean and installed, the key to maintenance is taking care of the O-rings. The first step is to keep it clean, best way to do that is the same way you cleaned it up for install. Never spray the chain directly, spray the brush or rag you are using. After that use a dry lubricant to take keep the O-rings from drying out. Hondas Dry Chain Lubricant is my preference, a good silicone spray also works. Either one will condition the O-rings and keep them from drying out.

I wipe mine down with a dry rag every 3rd, 4th day I ride when warming up.

When I douche it, Kerosene.

Excessive wear? Maintain proper chain tension, make sure rear tire has sound alignment.

I ride the fook out of my bike and stuff look proper... :thumbup

I used to use Chain Wax lubricant, but since it ran out earlier this spring while using it on my dirt bikes, I bought something designed more for dirt. I forget the brand of it, but it's more of a liquid than what Chain Wax is. It came off very clean when I washed my bike at the end of the season

I've found most if not all types of chain lube including the wax do nothing but attract dirt and sand to my chain. Living in South Central Florida the sand is everywhere. The O-rings are impregnated with lube from the factory. All I do is clean the chain every 200 miles or so with kerosene. Gone are those days of trying to get the caked up lube and dirt mixture off of the sprockets and those tight areas you can't reach.

Randy, you still want to put a light oil on the chain to protect it from rust and help it looking good. Maybe not for the internal protection anymore, but externally. I just ran out to the garage to check the brand I use: Maxima Chain Guard (http://www.maximausa.com/products/chainlubes/chainguard.asp). It's a very lightweight based oil, that only minimally collect dirt when I'm out at the MX track. When I get home, it pretty much rinses off when I wash the bikes.

They look good. But I still say the angle of the tips is incorrect. Same with the Graves. They should be pointed out and slightly down. Otherwise looks good.

In most groups, no passing unless flagged on by the person ahead of you. No passing in corners is allowed period. They will remove anyone who is considered a threat and danger to themselves, and more importantly, others.

Group 1 works mostly on street skills, working the throttle for greater control, turning the head, body lean, etc. It really is a great school, as it emphasizes on riding skills. Not how fast you can go around the track.

It really is an excellent school to go to. I have my check and form sitting in an envelope to go out tomorrow morning on my way to work.

Yeah, someone posted on the R1 Forum saying they use the PB Blaster Dry Lube. It's made for things such as chains. I bought a can at Home Depot and have been using that.
