yup, you read the review for the JJ RZ350? same kinda deal, slapped a set of R1-spec ohlins forks and brembo pots onto an RZ350, said it was far and away the hardest stopping bike he'd ever been on, due to the weight.

DSMPILOT
10-27-2007, 10:56 PM
You'd think those ohlins forks and brakes are the shit now, can't wait til about 10-15 years from now, we'd be like those are some skinny mofo's on there :lmao. Here's a comparison pic of the swingarm's and a pic of $400 worth of oem parts :thumbdown Doesn't look like much.

Junior
10-27-2007, 10:58 PM
I dunno, I think the size of the forks has more or less peaked, they're getting smaller again in motoGP. Bikes are gonna have to start getting lighter again soon too.

well, 500cc 2-stroke thumper is "big" to me, as I'm 210lbs and have a fuck of a time kicking the whore to life.

actually, speaking of that, DSM, you gotta hook me up with that link man, the thought of making a street legal YZ250 motard is driving me up the wall.

He's in ireland tho. You'd have to check your local laws regarding tagging a dirt bike. Some states are more relaxed than others, here in california it's next to impossible.

Are you going to try splitting the existing, making a new one, or getting one off another bike of the proper size? Not sure what your experience is, just my .02, I would make a new one of the proper width or get one off another frame. It will be easier to line up and center.

I'm going the easy route, cut the side's, spread it and bend the top sides straight then TIG it back together with little plates to take up the gap. If I replace that whole mount, it would involve alot of cutting and grinding. That swingarm came off a 87 CR250 so i don't even know the shock length or angle and length of the CR mount. I'm making adjustments as I go along and i'm also buying stuff by eyeballing it in pictures. I know it's ghetto but what can you do if you don't have the donor bike for comparisons.

Jacob: Thanks bro, hopefully with a little luck it'll all come together.

Thanks medic, so far almost two months gathering parts.

I just got both my exhaust today :jiggy. The 250 exhaust piping ID is almost identical to the stock pipe ID. The 426 is way bigger! Which one to use??? I'd jet it for the bigger pipe if I could find a jet kit :dunno I just won this shock off ebay for $51.00 Damn thats bank, silly snipers :nono

bigger isn't always better. What kind of carb is it that you'll be needing to rejet? "jet kits" are seriously not a clever buy anyways, get the jets and jet it yourself, every motor is different.

The carb is some funky Honda dual carb setup. You got primary and after 1/3rd throttle, the secondary starts to open, all mechanical. I was thinking about welding up the mounting plate into a rectangular box with one inlet to run a single carb but the carb itself would cost $300-500 bucks, so i scraped that idea. I can't find any jet kits, not even your basic rebuild kit.

Really?? did you look on ebay...we have been getting re-build kits and jets for 73-79 CB350's and 360's off there, I would think you could find some for an XR too.

looks like a late 80's mikuni roundslide set-up to me.

you should have your mains labelled on the end of the jet, axially. the pilots will have the size written on the side, radially, if that makes sense to you. Both should remove with a flat head screwdriver, just be carefull, there's sometimes a float seal thing that'll fall out with the secondary's. Primary should be accessable thru that 17mm cap at the bottom. Which won't be seized. The proper drain plug tho, almost certainly will be.

None on fleabay, they got older ones tho. I've been on there for the last few months, everyday scouring for parts! Maybe since they only made this bike for 84 and 85 is why parts are hard to come by.

I thought they were keihins or something, too tired to look now :old. They list the jets on microfiche, i can choose between 120 and 110 main jets and maybe 112 and #42 for the slow jet. My oem shop manual says it's supposed to be #112 for the main and #110 for the secondary. FI is so much simpler :r1lover

sure is, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

"main" and "secondary" are generally car carb terms tho, "pilot" and "main" is usually what you're after, pilot is just to keep it idling, if the bike is moving, you'll be off the pilot and on the main.

you COULD fuel inject it, iirc, you've got the knowledge to do it. an MS box and a sautering iron go a long way.

A little update..... Got the triples back and test fitted it. I think the forks weigh more than that frame :lol Frame weighs 24.4 lbs. haven't weighed the forks yet but them bitches are heavy. Oh BTW, if anyone knows a good shop that can make me some valve seats, let me know cuz thats the only thing holding me back on completing this project.

keep working, do you have a goal timewise to be done??

I have no time frame. I've learned from working at my job that deadlines kill any sort of fun you might have along the way. My only rush is that I want to scoot around on a motard for fun and it's killin me that parts are so hard to come by. I plan on buying a new motard around feb or march or whenever the new husky's arrive at the dealership, don't think i'll be done with the project by then but i'm gonna try. The ol XL can always be a buddy bike too.... for pullin buddies over to the dark side :muahaha

After I found a piece missing from the valve seat it's been on the back burner. There's no valve seats available for this thing. I've been looking for a good head on ebay without much luck. Guess that's the price i gotta pay with a bike that old and only made for 3 years :mad. Then i bought the new truck and been playing with that so i can beat Biga.
